Much of today's water resource management is centred around aquifers. How are they accessed? How are they recharged? How are they protected from over use or contamination? There are laws in some areas that prohibit the control and storage of rain water that falls onto your own property, for the very reason of ensuring that rain has the opportunity to eventually find its way to aquifers for communal access. The engineering behind determining placement/spread of wells, estimating available flow rates and predicting the transport of contaminants is truly fascinating and important to our sustained existence.

I took part in this years Planet Underground Roundtable event at the Texas 811 summit and one of the topics that was mentioned was the success of 811 Chicago in reducing damages by 50% over 5 years! The DIRT report mentioned it and so it was fresh in our minds, but what 811 Chicago has done isn't a miracle, it's just the result of being proactive rather than reactive. "A key factor is that the Office of Underground Coordination (OUC, within the Division of Infrastructure Management) reviews all new utility project designs." The 2022 DIRT Report looked at their success and underscored the significance 4 main points which make their process stand out: 1. Project design reviews 2. The importance of permits. 3. Enforcement of damage prevention laws - including investigations and sanctions. 4. Mapping sharing via dotMaps facilitate project coordination. After review the designs go to permitting and then 811 and so excavators know exactly where and when they can dig. There's little to no guesswork. I'd like to hear from anyone with experience of the 811 Chicago system to see if it's as good as it seems on paper?! #811chicago #damageprevention #utilitylcoates #cga #50in5 #callbeforeyoudig #utilocate
