Thank you to Socitm for inviting me onto your latest podcast to share my thoughts about how we can and should be using GenAI in local government! As always, my broad call to action is for responsible innovation - lets be ambitious about using AI, but that means actively navigating potential risks and building trustworthy processes as part of our basic ambitions. It is hard to think about AI in the public sector now though without some reflection on the recent #Horizon Post Office Scandal. We can and should use technology better to improve public services and ultimately peoples' lives, but we can also cause harm if we do it wrong. Even with good intentions, bad technology and/or bad governance can lead to negative outcomes. In turn this will hamstring future innovation by destroying public trust and the appetite for public investment in innovation. Let's try to get AI right!
New year? New podcast episode! And it's all about (of course) AI - generative artificial intelligence in particular. Hosted by experts in the field, explore different aspects of utilising GenAI, ranging from data management and ethical considerations to the potential benefits and drawbacks. Thank you to host SA Mathieson and guest experts Kurt Frary (Socitm VP and CTO at Norfolk County Council) and Sam Nutt (Researcher and Data Ethicist for the London Office of Technology & Innovation (LOTI)).
