The power of a verb
In 2003, amidst the dynamic landscape of Silicon Valley, I received a call that would forever alter my professional trajectory. The company on the other end of the line shared a vision crafted on September 3, 1995: to connect people and build communities to create economic opportunity for all. This call wasn't just about a job opportunity; it was a summons to grasp the significance of world impact that information, access to it, and science around it, could have in everyone’s lives. With a simple yet profound inquiry of "how can I help?" I embarked on a journey with eBay where my passion for the “information consumer” at scale took off.
But it was before my arrival in San Jose, CA, that another seismic shift was unfolding. On September 4, 1998, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, two PhD students at Stanford University, laid the cornerstone for what would become one of the most influential companies of our time: Google. Their humble beginnings in a Menlo Park garage not only birthed a groundbreaking search engine but also introduced a verb that would redefine our relationship with information—'to Google.' The power of a verb is that it compels action and actions take us places we never knew we could reach.
After over 12 years in the B2B2C world and almost 30 years in data science and the AI space, it is an honor and a privilege to start a new professional chapter alongside Prabhakar Raghavan, Catherine Courage, and Elizabeth Reid and their esteemed team of leaders responsible for Google’s most beloved products.
As the VP of Data Science & Engineering, my talented team and I aim to become the evidence-based science-rooted “headlights” that help inspire, inform and accelerate the evolution of everyday interactions with information.
I'm excited for the opportunity to grow 99,000 information interactions per second while making them more useful, actionable, human-centered, safe, inclusive, and joyful, pushing the boundaries of what applied AI can bring at Google-scale.
