Internship opportunities

To my students and former students who want to work in sports, especially: 1. It’s never too late to start. 2. The timing of your first break or internship does not matter. I did my internship with the 76ers, which led to more than six years and a promotion there, almost 18 months after receiving my undergrad degree. 3. In this business in particular, hustle, grind, and ask what else you can do above any job description. Get noticed and don’t let anyone outwork you. 4. Ask questions, be curious and I don’t care what position you are working toward, sharpen and improve your writing and content skills. 5. Network and don’t be afraid to ask for help. When I worked for the 76ers, Pat Croce once told me something I never forgot: “if you don’t ask, the answer is ‘no.’” It’s the equivalent of “you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take,” and it’s absolutely true. 6. If you want to work in PR, social media, be a coach or whatever, find your way into a sports organization any way you can, even if it means doing something that may not align with your long-term goals. For example, I spent two and a half years in the ticket office, which allowed me to learn that side of the business, how a sports team is run and I interacted with everyone in the organization because everyone needs tickets. #sportsbiz #sportsbusiness #networking

During the Premier Lacrosse League season, we get to work with an incredible group of Summer Interns. Whenever I'm with them, I continue to be inspired by these core characteristics that are part of our hiring scorecard: 1) Grind: plain and simple- working in sports is hard work. You don't get the weekends off like a normal 9-5 and you're on your feet. You service the players, fans, and partners. It never stops. 2) Curiosity: we push the envelope to "try new things" as sport trailblazers and often the interns are at the tip of the spear of these initiatives. Their willingness to test and learn allows the PLL to get better YoY. 3) Kindness: we interact with fans, players, partners, investors on game weekends - it's important to smile and do our best to create an amazing experience within the professional guardrails we set for game days. 4) Attention to Detail: interns that make it successfully orgs I've been in, concentrate on creating the best work product possible. Before submitting, they triple check their work -this starts to create trust between mgmt and the intern- building towards a longer term relationship.

I also help plan the trip to the NFL Draft every year and I organize Promo Day and Battle of the Goats!   Q: How did you get started?   A: I did a few sports internships in college and then got hired at Fox Sports after graduating!   Q: What is the most rewarding part of your job?   A: Seeing all the hard work come together on game day.   Q: Any advice for those trying to get a job in sports? So recently an intern asked me about my role at Knight Frank and I thought I would have some fun with it. I said the best way to explain my role and the department was to imagine that we are playing in the Champions League. I get to play in a team which has some of the best players in the industry who have scored some amazing goals! My role is like that of a striker. I do deals but the whole team helps set these goals up ! How ? Well, as follows….. So, you have the manager (regional director) they put their dream team together and make sure everyone is performing at their best and most importantly in their right positions. Then you have the goalkeeper, this is the front office manager who works hard to maintain market share and not allow the goals in from the competition. They are also the captain -keeping everyone motivated and staying positive. Then you have the defence ! This is our safety team and client services team making sure we are watertight with all our compliance and not making any mistakes and most importantly not losing any clients. On the wings - our property management team making sure everything is up and running, moving forward and in working order - keeping it all in line ! Midfield - Tenancy progression, carefully navigating the progression of the ball and making smooth passes to the striker. This is all just a bit of fun ! Disclaimer - we don’t earn like these footballers unless you work abroad😂 ! But the reason for sharing is just a reminder that if you have an intern in your office, take the time to get to know them. Keep it fun and exciting for them. Allow them to ask you as many questions as they like.
