This is one of the media pieces I have done in Australia around the Spencer Leniu/Ezra Mam racial slur case in the National Rugby League's season opener. (The full radio interview is [audio link] is below. While racism against Mam and other Indigenous Australians must be emphatically called out and eliminated, I have been frustrated by a lack of nuance around this discussion by some mainstream media. Specifically, the assumption that Spencer Leniu requires antiracism education. Yes, he and many of us in Pacific communities may require education about the historical and ongoing colonial and racial violence towards Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities (including dispossession, displacement and more), but he is not a stranger to racism. I see him as being “punched down to”. In the longer radio interview below, I also discuss: - the Samoan/Pacific concept of ‘Va’ and why Leniu’s offer to say sorry may not have been understood by non-Samoans - which is why I call for the NRL to have cultural intelligence/culturally safe practices - And I call for the NRL to add culturally safe restorative justice processes to its Judiciary process, so that our Indigenous and Pacific communities can heal from this event, not just get a ruling/punishment for Leniu that is meant to close the case. In no way, do I wish to decentre or disrespect Ezra Mam, a proud Kuku Yalanji and Torres Strait Islander man. Both he and Leniu are brilliant rising stars who deserve a bright future in the game they both love. I’ll post a related Sydney Morning Herald article I'm quoted in too. Lastly, if you’re interested why I’m talking about this case. First, I am a human rights advocate who has a special interest in race relations, and also social cohesion, which I can describe simply as the ‘glue’ or ‘fabric’ that keeps a society together or can tear it apart. I’m very interested in how we as Pacific peoples in Aotearoa NZ and Australia are contributing to building social cohesion or fraying (eroding) it. Heading the ball and the precautionary principle. There is more and more evidence that regular heading of a football can cause dementia. According to the article professional footballers are three and a half times more likely to get dementia than other people. If the precautionary principle were applied by the game’s administrators they’d now temporarily ban all heading in football while research was continued until it was proven that it’s actually safe or a protocol was invented where individual players might choose voluntarily but knowingly to take the risks of heading or a safe level of heading was developed. Lots of possibilities. Not applying the precautionary principle means you just carry on allowing heading until a movement against heading builds up enough steam to force action from the game’s administrators. If you asked a senior FA or Premier League official, face to face, as an individual, what’s more important, the wellbeing of players or avoiding the risks of impairing the business of football, they’d surely say player wellbeing is much more important. But somehow the institutions are happy to allow the practice to continue. This thing about institutions being toxic even while the individuals working there are mainly decent people (Post Office Horizon scandal) - I can’t my head around it. What an amazing addition to our company meetings! Having Stephen Rassel join us to share his knowledge on mental and physical development was the perfect 2024 kickoff I needed. During my department meeting today, my team discussed some key takeaways from Stephen's presentation. 1. You are no good to the people around you unless you take care of yourself first. It all starts with YOU. 2. The importance of sleep and practicing healthy sleep hygiene. 3. Creating a maintenance plan for your goals to assist in getting 1% better every day. This helps with not only reaching goals, but making goals feel less intimidating. Moving forward, we will implement small things he shared to push us to become the best we can be, even if its only 1% daily.

Unlike its previous edition, this slightly revised politics of resentment isn't conjured by underscoring capital ownership, it is created by race-tagging land ownership. What makes it a xerox copy of its predecessor is that it again instigates the have-nots against the haves. This is a cheap and dangerous trick that rips societies apart. By hypnotizing the materially unfortunate with victim hood, it vitiates them and renders them ineffective towards self development. By labeling property as theft it creates a culture of disrespect for private property (to what degree was internalization of this kind of language responsible for the recently revealed bout of kleptomania in a certain leftist member of NZ Parliament? To what extend is the broader property crime wave in New Zealand a consequence of this type of rhetoric?)
