In the June 2024 edition of MDPI Insights: The CEO’s Letter, I feature our 2023 Impact Factors in the Web of Science and the Citation Metrics released in Scopus. I'm excited to share that 237 MDPI journals received an Impact Factor this year, a nearly 14% increase from last year’s 208. Of these, 72% (171 journals) are in the top quartiles (Q1 or Q2). Additionally, 29 journals received their first Impact Factor, representing over 5% of the new journals accepted into the Web of Science. In Scopus, 274 MDPI journals received a CiteScore, with 57 receiving a CiteScore for the first time. I’m especially proud to share that 216 journals (79%) have a CiteScore rank in Q1 or Q2 in at least one subject category. Additionally, 162 journals increased their CiteScore by an average of 38%. Overall, this is an impressive performance and expansion of our portfolio. In this letter, I also recap the 2024 MDPI Toronto Summit, held on 20-21 June in Toronto, Canada. The event included keynote presentations by myself, Becky Castellon (IOAP Manager), and Dr. Giulia Stefenelli (Scientific Communications Lead). We also held two 75-minute Q&A sessions and a roundtable discussion on the future of peer review. These intimate gatherings (in this case, with 20 Chief Editors) allow us to share the latest MDPI news, exchange knowledge, build relationships with key stakeholders, and gather valuable feedback. Lastly, I would be remiss if I didn’t recap my visit to the Toronto office as an opportunity to connect with our Toronto staff and revisit my old stomping grounds. "Until recently, MDPI and Frontiers were known for their meteoric rise. At one point, powered by the Guest Editor model, the two publishers combined for about 500,000 papers (annualized), which translated into nearly USD $1,000,000,000 annual revenue. Their growth was extraordinary, but so has been their contraction. MDPI has declined by 27% and Frontiers by 36% in comparison to their peak.Despite their slowdown, MDPI and Frontiers have become an integral part of the modern publishing establishment. Their success reveals that their novel offering resonates with thousands of researchers. Their turbulent performance, however, shows that their publishing model is subject to risk, and its implementation should acknowledge and mitigate such risk." https://lnkd.in/gXST3uRz

Guest Post — Reputation and Publication Volume at MDPI and Frontiers Until recently, MDPI and Frontiers were known for their meteoric rise. At one point, powered by the Guest Editor model, the two publishers combined for about 500,000 papers (annualized), which translated into nearly USD $1,000,000,000 annual revenue. Their growth was extraordinary, but so has been their contraction. MDPI has declined by 27% and Frontiers by 36% in comparison to their peak. Despite their slowdown, MDPI and Frontiers have become an integral part of the modern publishing establishment. Their success reveals that their novel offering resonates with thousands of researchers. Their turbulent performance, however, shows that their publishing model is subject to risk, and its implementation should acknowledge and mitigate such risk. IJERPH’s freefall MDPI’s largest journal, the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health (IJERPH), was delisted from the Web of Science (WoS) in March 2023. What came next was both expected and staggering. The journal shrunk by 88% in comparison to its peak. It published about 1,800 monthly papers in the three-month period from December 2022 to February 2023, and it dropped to about 200 monthly papers in summer 2023. IJERPH’s decline is a stark reminder that in the absence of an Impact Factor, other journal traits matter little. Fast publishing, a high acceptance rate, and a low APC are unattractive to authors if they are not accompanied by a good (or in some cases, any) Impact Factor and ranking. full article and schemes: https://lnkd.in/dNwximup

🌟 Exciting News: Proud to Share My Reviewer Certificate from Heliyon Journal by Elsevier! 🌟 I am delighted to receive a Reviewer Certificate from Heliyon Journal, published by Elsevier, acknowledging the time and effort spent in the peer-review process. This practice sets a commendable standard for recognizing the contributions of reviewers. Thoughts on Significance of Reviewing Articles: 🌐 1. Peer-Driven Progress: Being a reviewer is not just a role; it's a commitment to advancing our collective knowledge. By reviewing articles, we play a crucial role in ensuring the quality and integrity of research, contributing to the robustness of scientific literature. 🤝 2. Collaborative Community: While it's heartening to receive a reviewer certificate, it's worth noting that not all publishers follow this practice. My suggestion to other publishers and journal leadership is to adopt this positive trend. Recognizing reviewers with certificates is a small yet meaningful step that acknowledges the invaluable time and effort they invest in the peer-review process. 🏆 3. Minimum Recognition: Reviewers are the backbone of scholarly publishing, and awarding a certificate is a minimum acknowledgment of their dedication. It not only recognizes individual efforts but also encourages a culture of appreciation within the academic community. 🚀 4. Setting a Standard: By embracing this practice, publishers and journal leaders set a standard for appreciating the collaborative nature of research. It promotes a sense of community and mutual respect among reviewers, authors, and editors. 🌈 5. Shaping the Future: Reviewing articles is not just about the present; it's about shaping the future of research and innovation. By providing constructive feedback, we contribute to the improvement of methodologies, experimental designs, and overall scientific rigor. 🎉 Gratitude: I am grateful for the forward-thinking approach of Heliyon Journal's editorial team. This recognition inspires a culture of appreciation and motivates reviewers to continue their dedicated efforts. Let's advocate for more publishers to adopt this practice and acknowledge the unsung heroes behind quality research! 🙌 #PeerReview #Recognition #AcademicCommunity #Elsevier #HeliyonJournal What is your take on this??????? Please comment and share your thoughts. ..

I help editors and publishers create impactful journals. Now: Journalology. Previously: Vice President, Nature journals; Executive Editor, The Lancet.
MDPI grew rapidly between 2017 and 2022, and changed scholarly publishing in the process. After every rise there is a fall (or perhaps a dip?). 2023 was a challenging year for MDPI, as it was for other fully OA publishers like Frontiers and Hindawi. MDPI published 5.3% fewer articles in 2023 than in 2022. Submissions increased by 8.6%. MDPI journals are rejecting more papers than they did previously. This week's Journalology newsletter includes a deep dive into the MDPI 2023 annual report, which was published on Friday. Mario Malički makes a compelling case for restructuring peer review in scientific publishing. By standardizing reviewer questions, we can improve the reliability and integrity of published research. Insights from his role at Research Integrity and Peer Review and a pilot study with Elsevier suggest structured reviews lead to more consistent and fair evaluations. This approach promises a future where scientific findings are vetted more transparently and effectively. A must-read for anyone involved in scholarly publishing. https://lnkd.in/dpxBez7V
