At MedAire, we understand that the challenges faced by aviation professionals don’t pause when the wheels leave the tarmac. Life’s most difficult moments can come at us full force, even when we're miles above the ground, tasked with the safety of others. Today, we share a moving video case study of a pilot who received heart-wrenching news about a loved one while on duty. The emotional turbulence experienced could have been a solitary journey, but through MedAire’s Peer Support Program, he found a compassionate ally. WHY MEDAIR? Medair is well-known for going the extra mile to bring assistance to people in need. Quite literally, when the road ends, Medair keeps going. We are driven to help people who may have been overlooked or neglected because where they live is hard to reach due to the terrain or security conditions or a lack of roads. Our teams travel by helicopters, trucks, motorcycles, bicycles, speedboats, canoes—whatever it takes to reach isolated and hard-hit communities off the beaten path. When the road ends, that often means continuing on foot—through dense forests, desert landscapes, or muddy swamps. Our ethos of going the extra mile doesn’t mean we always work in hard-to-reach places, of course. We work where we are needed, and where the need is greatest. What it does mean is that we do not accept that remoteness is a reason not to respond—and when the road comes to an end, our teams are determined to keep going. https://lnkd.in/eAW5SNhk

Missed our webinar with the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS)? Don’t worry, you can now watch it on demand. A senior RFDS pilot explains: - what he does before and during a flight - how he measures and responds to risks - what he’d like you to do when he’s coming in to land. Find Non-controlled operations – the RFDS experience in the video section of the pilot safety hub. https://lnkd.in/gUEfFy8p

In my latest installment on the Master Pilot Forum, I discuss the challenge of calling out risky Pilot Flying decisions while serving as the Pilot Monitoring. This category of callouts is difficult for some pilots because it can appear confrontational. This is especially challenging for new FOs. https://lnkd.in/gAeXsm3n

In the air medical world, there are two main types of transports: inter-facility (from one hospital to another) and scene (originating from a non-hospital location.) One of the big differences between a scene call and an inter-facility transport is the landing site. Rather than landing at a hospital or airport helipad, a scene call landing could happen on a variety of surfaces and requires extra precautions to ensure the safety of everyone on site. In some cases we are able to land on an improved surface, like a roadway or concrete pad, but in many cases we have to land at an unimproved location like a dirt road or grass field. This is one of the areas where our healthcare partners help ensure the safety of our teams. They train with our crews so that when the time comes, they can assist in selecting and setting up a safe landing zone, communicating with our team on board the aircraft to ensure everything looks good from above and below, before we touch down. It takes major teamwork to ensure we arrive at and depart a scene safely and we’re grateful to every person who plays their part in this process day in and day out. We’re lucky to be part of such a strong ‘village.’ 📍 LF 23 - Moses Lake on a scene call in Douglas County, Washington 📸 LF 23 RW pilot, Silas B. #lifeflightnetwork #therewhenyouneedus #airmedicaltransport #airmedical #criticalcare #cct #airambulance #lifeflight #emergencyhealthcare #ems #emergencymedicine #teamwork #collaboration #partners #takesavillage

Exploring the intersection of psychology and aviation safety, researchers highlight the Dunning-Kruger effect, where individuals overestimate their abilities, posing risks in high-stakes environments like flying. This cognitive bias, first identified through an unusual bank robbery involving lemon juice, can lead pilots to make dangerous decisions. Solutions include promoting intellectual humility and adopting a growth mindset to enhance self-awareness and decision-making, crucial for improving safety in single-pilot operations. #FlightSafety #AviationPsychology #DunningKrugerEffect #PilotTraining #RiskManagement #SinglePilotOperations #IntellectualHumility #AviationSafety #CognitiveBias #AircraftAccidents https://lnkd.in/db2Vvk6Y
