Biotech is attracting a surprising amount of funding 👀 I’ve been diving into the current state of venture capital and wanted to share some interesting insights ⤵️ Now while AI seems to be getting the most attention, the real star is biotech ringing in the most most dollars. In Q1, the US tech sector saw $8.04 billion in VC funding, driven largely by AI. Meanwhile, healthcare secured a whopping $9.81 billion, making it the leading sector in VC for the first time since late 2022. Biotech deals are different from the usual tech investments. Instead of chatbots and cloud computing, we’re seeing bets on drug development and targeted medicine. For example: Uniquity Bio - just received $300 million from Blackstone, which focus on autoimmune diseases. These investments really show a growing interest in healthcare, (partly because it's fairly recession-proof). Plus, biotech is one of the few areas with an active exit market. In Q1 alone, biotech IPOs raised over $1.3 billion, which is up more than 300% year-over-year. 📈 What trends are you seeing? Venture capitalists on a panel at MedCity News' INVEST conference in Chicago provided insights on the current #healthcarefunding environment, their views on AI, and why diversity still really matters. Key takeaways: 💹 The #digitalhealth funding market has more discipline, seeking founders who are paying more attention to unit economics and contribution margin and thinking critically about the milestones in their business and KPIs. 💹 Most investors want to help their portfolio companies sustainably accelerate profits and build the networks, such as #healthsystem connections, necessary for eventual commercialization. 💹 When considering #healthAI startups, a key question is asked: Is this a product or a company? AI should be an integral part of the core business rather than a trendy add-on. 💹 Diversity still really does matter. Some of the big value props for health tech startups are how 'innovative' and 'agile' they are. But historically, healthcare hasn't been super innovative or agile. For health techs to reach their buyer, the need to start understanding them at a much deep level, especially risk tolerance - both at the organizational AND individual level. 🏢👨🏻💼 An example... as a health tech SaaS, you might be targeting a physician group that's very risk-adverse. That should impact how you message at the account level. You'll want to lean on proof points highlighting your proven track record, long-time industry expertise, etc. Within that account, you might have a young CTO who's part of the buying committee. They may be more risk-tolerant, so at a persona level, that's where you'd want to highlight your innovative and agile approach. The devil is in the details, as they say. Nuanced messaging can help you cut through.
