With Juneteenth recently being recognized as a national holiday, corporations are going to do what corporations do. It borders on duty to draft an internal statement accompanied by a social media post and in some cases service. This makes sense because even though they may not have the levels of diverse representation they aspire to, celebrating occasions like Juneteenth may be very important to their employees. Of course, I want my employer to recognize Juneteenth and they do through word and deed. I am more concerned about how average Americans, specifically Black Americans honor the day than large employers, many of whom are neophytes in this space. So while it is important to shine a light on how large employers sincerely show up in these spaces, they are corporations. I am having more of a struggle trying to figure out why I didn't take the day off, than I am with social media posts. It will absolutely be my last day working on Juneteenth because the personal example the average citizen and I set for our kids, our extended families, and my communities will always have a larger impact on how people view Juneteenth, which is the main reason we are still celebrating freedom over 150 years later. #juneteenth

Today, we commemorate Juneteenth, a day of immense significance in American history. It marks the liberation of the last remaining enslaved African Americans, officially abolishing slavery and embodying the promise of freedom and equality for all. Juneteenth serves as a powerful reminder of our ongoing journey towards justice, equality, and inclusion. It's a time to reflect on the struggles and triumphs of the past and to recommit ourselves to creating a future where every individual is respected, valued, and empowered. Here at Comcast, we believe in fostering a workplace that celebrates diversity and embraces the richness of different perspectives. Our commitment to inclusivity extends beyond words to tangible actions that promote equity and fairness. As we observe Juneteenth together, I encourage each of us to take this moment not only to celebrate but also to educate ourselves further about the historical and cultural significance of this day. Let's continue to learn from one another, support each other, and stand united against injustice in all its forms. Today and every day going forward, let's honor Juneteenth by reaffirming our shared commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion within our workplace and beyond. #IWorkForComcast

✊🏿🧡 CELEBRATING JUNETEENTH: Thank you to the Black Culture Collective at Orange County Social Services Agency for having The OCEA Hot Dog Wagon at their Juneteenth Celebration Wednesday, June 19! SSA’s Black Culture Collective consists of about 60 members, and is a revamp of the former African American Roundtable, which was established at SSA in the 90’s. The group assembled the lunch to celebrate Juneteenth—a recognition of June 19, 1865—when news of freedom reached enslaved people in Texas, marking a pivotal moment in American history. Juneteenth celebrates liberation, resilience, and the ongoing fight for equality. “It was a great turnout. We had people coming from different locations—from Garden Grove, OCPC, Santa Ana—not just Eckhoff,” said Rebecca Polee, a Staff Specialist in Children & Family Services at SSA, and a member of the Black Culture Collective. “We sometimes get so involved and invested in the work and the service that we do. It’s nice to have this downtime, to engage, socialize, and bring some history.” Juneteenth became a federally-recognized holiday in 2021, and subsequently a State holiday. The recognition of Juneteenth as a holiday was prioritized by our membership and included in our proposal to the County during negotiations in 2023. The County initially refused, later offering Juneteenth if another holiday or 20 hours from PIP were forfeited. The negotiations team opposed these concessions and suggested alternative solutions, which the County rejected. Negotiations continued, highlighting that every gain requires trade-offs. If establishing Juneteenth as a holiday is of interest to you, please say so when the next negotiations survey comes your way prior to us returning to the table in 2026. In honor of Juneteenth, which occurs every year on June 19th, many employers now recognize and observe this day to demonstrate their commitment to racial justice and equity. While recognizing Juneteenth is an important step, organizations must apply equitable practices every day of the year. Incorporating Juneteenth into a company’s broader initiatives can reinforce its commitment to these values. Many companies may offer the day as a paid holiday or provide holiday pay to those who work. Beyond this, employers can use the time around the holiday to foster an inclusive environment and demonstrate their commitment to racial equity through various initiatives. Some companies also use this day to educate all employees about Black people's rich and challenging legacy in the US including the eventual abolition of slavery. However, it's not just about recognizing a single day. It's about how organizations treat the Black people they serve as customers and clients and support Black employees daily. Real change comes from everyday actions and decisions that ensure fairness, respect, and equity for all. At Equius Group, we believe working towards racial equity is an ongoing journey. Recognizing. Juneteenth is just one piece of a much larger puzzle. #Juneteenth #FreedomDay #EquiusGroup

Today, let's reflect on a pivotal moment in American #history. On June 19, in the year 1865, enslaved Texans in Galveston were finally informed of their #freedom — over two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. By the next year, the first #Juneteenth celebrations took place in the Lone Star State. To honor Juneteenth this year, our Black ENGIE Employee Network (BEEN) hosted a webinar today with speakers from CultureAlly to educate our ENGIE community on the day’s significance. Thank you Diana Montero, MBA-HRM and Dani Strang for speaking with us on the contributions of Black Americans, addressing common Juneteenth misconceptions, and asking what freedom really means in our world today. We’d also like to honor the dedicated work of activists and civil rights leaders who have advocated for official recognitions of Juneteenth. In 1979, former State Rep. Al Edwards of #Houston introduced the Texas state bill to make Juneteenth a paid holiday, which other states soon began to follow. And in 2016, at 89 years old, former teacher and lifelong activist Opal Lee walked from her home in Fort Worth, #Texas, to the U.S. capital to get Juneteenth named a national holiday. Her work helped push Congress in 2021 to mark Juneteenth as a new federal #holiday — an event that hadn’t happened in nearly 40 years. ENGIE’s #diversity is one of our greatest strengths, and we commit to honoring this powerful moment in the continued journey to #equality in North America. #WithENGIE #CultureAtENGIE #Juneteenth2024 #BlackHistory #CivilRights #SocialJustice #InclusionMatters #Culture #LeadershipDevelopment #CommunityEngagement #CorporateResponsibility #DiversityandInclusion #EmployeeEngagement #HistoricalAwareness #SocialImpact #WorkplaceDiversity #HumanRights
