Blast from the past ! I always enjoyed riding with a journeyman as an apprentice. The knowledge and mistakes it saved me and the producers were PRICELESS! Not to mention the memories (like this one) that gets shared years later. I’ve seen a common trend played out that should concern every individual that utilizes skilled trades. The lack of apprentice utilization is staggering and has caused a deficit in the skilled labour pool across the country. I understand there are other compounding factors that keep individuals from exploring the trades. I however feel this has been the biggest cause for concern. As an industry we aren’t training the next level of success, we are looking to a false sense of security that individuals with little to no field Experience will be competent, safe, experienced resources. We need to get people in the field learning process, safe work practices, and proper time management. It’s up to us to provide the avenues for career growth and train these people for success in the future. #getatrade #electrical #instrumentation #controltechcares

💥 We're enhancing our response time to serve you better! 💫 Survey after survey and feedback after feedback tell us almost always the same thing! One of the most important values we can add for you is RESPONSE TIME! 💫 You measure us by how quickly we can get your quote back to you, how quickly we can complete your repair, how quickly we can get your motor to you, and lastly, whether we can meet your plant deadlines on our onsite field and electrical projects! 💫 Time is the commodity you seem to have the least of and value the most. We hear you! 💫 While we feel (because you’ve told us) this is a very strong competitive edge for us relative to other service centers and electrical contractors, we know you want us to continue to get better. 💫 Here is what we are working on to improve our ability to meet your desired turnaround and project targets. ➡ Staffing – This may sound obvious (and it is), but we are continuing to ramp up our recruiting and hiring efforts, looking for all levels of electricians, mechanics, machinists, etc. ➡ Project Managers – We feel the best way to manage complex projects is with capable and qualified site managers working in small groups to be responsive to your ever-changing needs. ➡ Training – Sometimes the best way to grow is to train people to line up with our Core Values. We have recently created our electrical apprenticeship program to continue to grow our team and talent. We look for people who “get it.” They know that downtime is expensive, painful, and must be minimized as much as possible. ➡ Streamlining the quote process – Sometimes the delay in getting quotes is due to waiting on pricing for parts, etc. By looking at the past history of similar equipment and streamlining our quoting process, we are working on shrinking the time from drop-off to quote. We’ll keep you in the loop on our progress on this issue. Rest assured, we understand your need for a quick turnaround. However, we also know that the quotes, repairs, and projects have to be done the right way … NO SHORTCUTS! That allows us to stand behind our work, whether something is in warranty period or not. If we discover that we made a mistake, we will honor it. We’re working hard to balance the three needs of quick turnaround, thorough work, and best-in-class warranty. #electromechanical #industrialelectrian #rotatingequipment #electromechanicalrepair #rotatingequipmentrepair

Expert in helping construction and real estate development firms create their risk transfer programs.
Interesting article here by Orianna Rosa Royle at Fortune on how there is a noticeable increase in members of the Gen Z generation entering trade schools rather than attending college. There are a number of factors behind this trend (e.g., baby boomers retiring from the #construction industry so demand for skilled labor is increasing, sticker price for college keeps increasing [Vanderbilt University is now charging $100,000 a year], etc.), but at the end of the day having a technical skill that requires effort and training to master (e.g., welding, HVAC maintenance and repair, electrician, etc.) will be rewarded when demand is high and supply is low.
More Gen Z are choosing trade schools over college to become welders and carpenters because ‘it’s a straight path to a six-figure job'

Skilled trades are having a moment! Gen Z workers in the US are increasingly opting for vocational training over traditional college education. With rising pay and advancements in technology, trades like welding and construction are becoming more attractive. Vocational program enrollment is up, with a notable increase in students studying construction trades and HVAC. The pandemic has prompted many young people to reconsider the value of a college degree and explore alternative career paths with better job security. Despite the physical demands, the hands-on nature of the work and potential for lucrative careers are drawing many to the trades. Challenges such as a shortage of experienced workers and a need for better soft skills among new hires exist, but the trades offer promising career opportunities, entrepreneurial potential, and competitive salaries for those willing to pursue them. #SkilledTrades #VocationalTraining #AlternativeCareerPaths

Creating Innovative Spaces to Live, Work, Play - Experience Focused on the Convergence of Real Estate and Technology
As always, Brad Hargreaves and his Thesis Driven hit the nail on the head (no pun intended); thanks for the mention of Cuby! In 1990, the average age of a person in the construction industry was 32; today, it is 42. For every seven that leave the construction industry, only one replaces them. That means that 1/2 of the industry is set to retire or leave in the next 20 years. We have 1.4m unfilled jobs. As a result, the US has a shortfall of 6.5m single-family homes due to a decade of under-building. 50% of households cannot afford a median-priced home of only $250k. Additionally, 50% of those who rent are cost-burdened, paying more than 30% of their income on rent. Yet the way we build them has remained the same for decades despite magnitudes of technical efficiencies that have accelerated nearly all other industries. So, construction needs to either become far more efficient or demand needs to slow (which it will not), as we’re approaching an untenable position. Therefore, the only obvious path forward is to make construction far more efficient, allowing more supply to drown the insatiable demand for new homes. At Cuby, we're proud to be tackling this behemoth of a problem by setting the stage to commercialize hundreds of mobile micro-factories (MMFs)™ for last-mile construction that allows incumbents to build more with less skilled labor hours (both off-site and on-site).
The US has a shortage of more than half a million construction workers, and the problem is only getting worse. And that's not including the lack of skilled maintenance and repair technicians with knowledge of plumbing, HVAC, electrical, and more. Today's Thesis Driven digs into the paths to solving this shortage, from demand side solutions - such as new construction methodologies and workflow management tools like Bridgit - to supply-side fixes such as apprenticeship programs and better vocational education. The clock is ticking, as a quarter of all construction workers are over the age of 55. Full letter in comments.
