LinkedIn is driving me crazy. No, I'm not lying A few months ago, I found myself frustrated with LinkedIn . Seeing peers landing paid internships at good companies, pursuing extra certifications, and seemingly mastering time management left me questioning: • Am I falling behind? • Why can't I juggle multiple commitments as easily? • Will I ever be as good as these people? Then, I had a realization: These people weren't my competition – they were my motivation. I shifted my perspective. Instead of comparing myself, I started learning from their experiences. I began to see their accomplishments as a roadmap for my own growth. This mindset shift reignited my enthusiasm for LinkedIn. Now, I use the platform to: 1. Identify skill gaps 2. Everyone got scared at some point I will never forget how paranoid I was when I made the first tweet on twitter Trust me when I say I doubted many things at that point I was so unsure of what I was doing I just kept on applying for internship opportunities, learning and believing Over time, I have come to understand that it is okay to feel scared when starting something new. We all experience fear and doubt, especially when faced with unfamiliar territory. But you know what separates successful individuals? They do it anyway. I realized that successful people embrace their fears and doubts, but they don't let them hold them back. They take action and give their best, knowing that growth and success come from stepping outside our comfort zones. I want to encourage everyone out there to pursue their goals with confidence and resilience. Don't let fear stop you from taking that first step. My 1 month journey on LinkedIn (Not a success story) So, about a month ago, I came to LinkedIn with plans of showcasing my work to amp up my job/internship search. Little did I know, I'd stumble upon an unexpected joy that this whole journey brought. The past month? Well, let's just say it's been a bit of a rollercoaster—not exactly a smooth ride, but you know what? In the midst of those bumps, I've soaked up a ton of knowledge, and I'm genuinely thrilled that I kicked off this journey. Sometimes, it's those unexpected twists that teach us the most. Last week was a whole different story: - Had three semester exams on my plate (another one today) - Yet, guess what? LinkedIn has become my guilty pleasure! - Even in the middle of exams, I just couldn't resist posting now 😂. - Call it a bad habit, but posting three times a week? It's my thing right now 😁. Honestly, every time I throw something out there: - The excitement is real. - When those likes and comments start rolling in, it's pure happiness! - You guys, the support is unreal, and it seriously puts a massive grin on my face. - Huge thanks for being such an awesome audience!!! Navigating through the whole likes and impressions scene can get a bit overwhelming: - But I've got to remind myself to zoom out. - Each interaction, isn't just about the numbers—it's a nod to my journey of learning and growth. Recruiting is less overwhelming when you connect with job seekers going through a similar experience. Reach out to peers and mentors (both within and outside of your school) who have/are going through PM recruiting for support. Learn from their experiences. Celebrate each other’s wins to stay motivated. Also, come join us at Product Haven! (https://lnkd.in/ggKXWxkX) This is a wonderful Slack community founded by Arun Mommileti for college students recruiting for product management internships and FT roles. I wish I’d found a community like this way earlier. Lewis C. Lin's Slack is another place you can find mock partners and aspiring PMs from a variety of backgrounds. 👉 Not Give Up Entirely While I made the right decision opting for a SWE internship for the summer (in my case at least), I wish I’d continued looking for PM opportunities for upcoming semesters instead of giving up until the FT cycle. With many big tech firms wrapping up university recruiting around this time, PM internship recruiting seems to slow down as well. However, opportunities do open up from time to time so keep your resume ready and keep an eye out! Follow content and creators such as Morgan Young who regularly post about such tech internship opportunities. Having backups is just as important so seek out PM-adjacent opportunities that interest you at a variety of small to big companies. 4.5 years ago some people told me I shouldn’t apply for LinkedIn because I wasn’t the “ideal candidate.” I wasn’t doing a similar role, I wasn’t coming from the advertising business, and there were hundreds of applicants wanting the same role. But then… people often tell you many different things or project their fears. I loved LinkedIn as a platform, so I applied for the role... and I got it! Today marks my 4 years at LinkedIn! In the past 4 years, this “not ideal candidate” has led the largest global accounts, won internal top performance awards, and worked with the most amazing marketers, product experts, and salespeople across the industry… BUT this is not a post to brag about myself. This is for all the “not so ideal candidates”: yes, maybe on paper I wasn’t a straightforward fit, but I knew I had all the skills to do the role. It was just a matter of packaging it the right way. So, please believe in yourself and go for the role. And for all who might be looking for that ideal employee: I once hired an intern that nobody wanted in the full-time role, and now he is thriving in a top consultancy firm. This warms my heart because I believe it's the beginning of something extraordinary. Many people shy away from utilising LinkedIn to its fullest potential due to their fear of appearing foolish in front of their peers and digital network. When I first joined LinkedIn in 2016, it was around the start of my professional career, and it was humbling to be surrounded by ‘accomplished individuals’ with impressive titles, posting expert-ish content and exchanging quality opinions in the comment section. At that time, I was an intern grappling with imposter syndrome. Now I think of it, I deliberately opted for a slightly distant, hazy headshot, believing I needed to look older. Or present myself a certain way. But importantly, I understood that my presence here had to be defined by value and knowledge. And so I dived into sharing my thoughts and knowledge in actual articles here. Interestingly, I grew my connections and opportunities tricked in. Fast forward to today, and this initial approach inadvertently confined me to a narrow spectrum of professional content, primarily revolving around job announcements and thought leadership only. The more I focused on excellence, the more I overlooked consistency. So I hope to reverse this without losing quality, but not necessarily excellence. As I juggle graduate school, my role at BeamX, and my pursuit of a summer internship in a different country, I commit to sharing both sides of the coin - the struggles and the triumphs. In essence, I'm hoping to break free from my own shackles, confining my LinkedIn presence and connecting more with other professionals navigating their paths. Celebrating small wins🥳. Thank you to everyone who has connected or followed me. You are all great people and I appreciate you! A little storytime shall we? I joined LinkedIn about two years ago. I never heard of the app before then and clearly didn't know how it worked. All I recall was that I created a profile because the coordinator of a particular internship program I applied for encouraged all interns to do so. Few months later, I came online and saw two invitations to connect which I accepted. I sent requests to a few people LinkedIn recommended to me. I never posted anything nor engaged in any posts because the app was very strange to me. I was just a spectator. Anyways, I became active in 2023. I started loving the app and no longer regarded it as 'a place of oppression'. LinkedIn is a place where you can be your authentic self. Unlike instagram where you post only 'instagram worthy' pictures or videos. I have attended a number of LinkedIn live sessions, mentorship sessions and conferences. Davidson Oturu Mentorship is one I encourage everyone to participate in. Experts in various fields are invited to share their experiences and speak on their journey to success. There's always something to learn on here. From articles, to success stories, to job opportunities, to school applications... In conclusion, consistency is paramount and it pays off in the long run. I got rejected 5 times in one week - wake up call to transform my life! July 2022 “After careful consideration, we regret to inform you that you won't be joining our team….All the Best and Have a nice weekend” Yeah, this will make my weekend better, I thought. (It was my fifth rejection letter in a row for a summer internship) It made me feel sick, I applied to expect bare minimum pay, and basically got rejected to do FREE work because they had tons of applicants already! Made me question the whole conventional career path. Dad: “Did you hear back from the fifth company?" Me: "Oh, you mean the one where they're looking for someone with the charm of George Clooney and the skills of Elon Musk? Yeah, they rejected me." Dad: "You'll find the perfect opportunity, and I'll be here to celebrate with you.” Me: "Maybe I don’t want to be a Commodity anymore…." July 2023, With a strong personal brand on Twitter, LinkedIn, and An Email list I am not looking for a job anymore. (maybe my Dad still is but I am not) Someone recently told me - “Oh I get tons of leads from cold emails and referrals, I do not need to post content daily, it’s a waste of my time” I have one thing to say- “You reach one person with one email, I reach 915 people and their second connections with one LinkedIn post” Anyone in the world could resonate and send a dm for - Collaboration, Appreciation, Podcast invite, Work opportunities, friendship, and much more!
