Happy 13th Birthday to the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden! Today marks the 13th anniversary of 'birthing' part of Mark Fisher and Maynard Thane's dream to make the Zoo the most sustainable zoo in the US. The foresight and vision of Steve Melink, along with the Melink Solar team, helped to build the largest publicly accessible urban solar project in the country in 2011! The 1.56 Megawatt solar array comprised of 6,384 solar panels covers over 800 parking spaces. It saves the Zoo on average about 1,680,000 kWh of electrical expense every year. AND... it will be joined by its little brother, who will make 2.84 Megawatts with 4,992 solar panels over an additional 800 parking spaces and Reclaim the title of the Largest Publicly Accessible Urban Solar Project in the country in the very near future! Many thanks to the Zoo Board and all of the Amazing Zoo staff for making an impact on our local community and for inspiring others by being among the first to take action on making sustainability a part of your mission. Happy Birthday!
