Earlier today, I wrote a piece on my personal page with some personal reflections on the appropriateness or otherwise of 26th January, as Australia's "national day". I've long held the view - many years before I became aware of the feelings of Australia's First Peoples about the appropriateness of the date - that using the anniversary of the foundation of Sydney (which, claims that it actually represents the anniversary of the creation of Australian citizenship in 1948 notwithstanding, is what the vast majority of Australians think that the 26th January commemorates) as a celebration of Australia as a nation is a bad choice. It reinforces what I've long felt is an excessively Sydney-centric interpretation of Australia's post-1778 history and culture. Most nations who have 'national days' - and especially those nations who were once colonies of other nations - have as their national days, a day which their citizens identify as symbolizing them ceasing to be a colony, rather than of becoming one, as the 26th January does. To the many people who I know will disagree with me about this, I want to say, I love this country as much as you do, and I'm no less proud of being an Australian than you are. But I don't need to commemorate the founding of Sydney to prove it: and I don't see why I should be expected to. The article is also now on my website, here: https://lnkd.in/gHwtpkN5 - along with a map of 'Australia' that omits NSW, Queensland and Victoria, rather than Tasmania (as all too many maps purporting to be of 'Australia' still do). It was of course drawn up by Abel Tasman, the first European to "discover" Tasmania (or Van Diemen's Land, as he called it), as well as New Zealand - 128 years before Captain James Cook, aided by Tasman's maps, "discovered" the site of present-day Sydney Airport, an event which the Sydney-centric view of Australian history still regards as the [European] "discovery" of Australia. Thankyou Ratih Luhur for finding and posting this map.

🇭🇳 Celebrating My Honduran Heritage on Independence Day 🇭🇳 As a Honduran American, September 15th holds a special place in my heart. It's not just Honduras' Independence Day; it's a celebration of my roots, my culture, and the journey that led me to where I am today. 🌟 My cultural heritage has always been a source of strength and understanding. Growing up, I learned the value of embracing diverse perspectives and the importance of cultural intelligence. These lessons became invaluable in my career, especially when negotiating hotel contracts in the Latin American market. 💼🌎 I noticed something crucial - the power of cultural intelligence. While my colleagues sometimes struggled understanding cultural nuances, my background allowed me to connect more deeply with Latin American partners and clients. It gave me an edge in developing better negotiation strategies, which, in turn, helped mitigate financial risks for my clients. 💪💰 This experience ignited a passion within me. I realized the need to raise awareness about the importance of cultural competence in business. And so, Cultural Spark was born. 🚀 At Cultural Spark, we specialize in the Latin American market, offering personalized consulting services both in-person and virtually. Our approach involves self-reflection exercises to identify biases and assumptions. We provide feedback and coaching to navigate cultural nuances for effective communication and relationship-building. 🤝📚 Now, I can proudly say that Cultural Spark is changing lives. We help business development executives in meetings and events companies develop customized communication strategies and empower their teams to overcome cultural missteps and communication obstacles. The result? Greater profitability in this dynamic market. 💼✨ By understanding and appreciating the rich tapestry of cultures in Latin America, we're helping our clients avoid worst-case scenarios and embrace a world of opportunities. 🌎🌟 Say goodbye to lost opportunities and hello to greater profitability in this market with Cultural Spark! 🚀🌎 I have a deep personal connection to Honduras as my family's roots trace back to the beautiful city of Tegucigalpa, and I grew up with rich cultural heritage and traditions of Honduras. It's a time for me to honor my heritage and share the beauty of Honduras with the world through my work at Cultural Spark. 🇭🇳✨ #CulturalSpark #HondurasIndependence #ProudHonduranAmerican #HonduranHeritage #IndependenceDay #CulturalIntelligence 🇭🇳🌟

Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country - John F. Kennedy Every day, and even more on today's day, we should be asking this great question of ourselves. Personally, I feel like I don't need anything more from this country, but I have responsibility to do the best I can so future generations get to enjoy benefits I do: Some of the recent examples (in no particular order): 1. Raise my son to be honorable man, kind, hardworking and respecting 2. Do not litter - I hate seeing litter on the streets! Would rather have USA look clean like Singapore 3. Support and live in natural law of capitalism (this one is quite personal, but I trully believe in it) 4. Vote - if one doesn't vote, he/she is basically giving OK for dictatorship to flourish (I get the lack of good choices too 😁) 5. Travel and learn more from other cultures, so I can be of greater value to my country 6. Love and support my wife as a natural way to strengthen family as an essential part of a healthy and functioning society The question I have for you all is: What are you all doing to make your country better today, and every day? #happy4th #independenceday

To pay tribute to a person who set a legacy in our country as the First Finance Secretary, Treasury Secretary, Bank of PNG Governor and a Prime Minister who did not budge to pressure but brought structural changes in the economy, which laid the foundation for a resilient economy. Such people are rare, but, how did he do it? When you want to start something, you think hard and have a clear vision and direction for the start-up. For instance, a businessman, from nowhere, they sit back and think about how to set up a business and then invest in it, and through hard work make it a successful business. Now, the initial businessman passes on, and leaves the business to his children or wife to run it, but, the children or the wife has no clear direction to run the business, because, their thought pattern is clouded with money and luxury which was created by the initial investor. Hence, they don't know how to run the business, so the business goes bust. Similar analogy. When the country was gaining its independence, the forefathers, including late Sir Mekere, had a great vision for the young country (PNG). They already predicted what the country will achieve and how it will progress, hence the management part of the country became clear. Negotiation's took place to combine both German Niugini and British Papua, they managed to do it because, a common vision was shared amongst our founding fathers. They progressed the country well, until, most of them passed on and left the country to a younger generation that does not seem to have the similar vision and views of our forefathers. There was no greed, all they cared for was to take the country forward with its people. Like the children who took over the business of their father or mother who was the initial investor, younger generation took over the country. The younger generation, which are spoiled by power and money, we we start to see greed and selfishness crawl into our country. Rather than thinking as a country, people in power and those in offices become selfish and try their best be enrich themselves at the cost of our country. Corruption and plundering of PNGs natural resources wealth has become a norm. Rather than propelling the country forward with visions, we are so much focused on our own greed, that millions of kina have been plundered, hence building mansions in Australia at the cost of our health, education, roads, etc. So Kudo's to late Sir. Mekere on his death anniversary and our forefathers who had the vision, which is lost by this current generation, and it would be hard to get back on that track.
THE family of late Sir Mekere Morauta celebrated a feast to remember one of the great leader of this country. The feast was held on January 6 at late Sir Mekere Morauta’s office residence in Konedobu, Port Moresby. Click here to read more: ( https://lnkd.in/g-Ve3f6a )
