Working with the bank on the black advisory board committee has been a pleasure so much initiatives have been born out of the great work at the bank for black entrepreneurs. Just to give an idea of the impact we have achieved working with the bank see these high level stats. 2023 Impact: Only 40% of Black-owned businesses trust banks, and less than 20% engage banks for finance, contributing to their median turnover being half the UK average. However, entrepreneurs who have engaged in our programme are TWICE as likely to report trusting in banks, a key enabler to our support. 5,812 Black business owners engaged with support with 23,461 hours invested, up from 4,000 entrepreneurs and 17,000 hours in 2022. 116% and 117% of targets respectively. £500,000 worth of TV advertising through the Black in Business initiative, plus £50,000 grants via Foundervine and Jamii 42 events sponsored or self-organised, with frontline banking teams attending each one. There are persistent disparities in business outcomes for business owners from ethnic minority backgrounds. ➡ After starting a business, Black business owners have median turnover of just £25,000, compared to £35,000 for White business owners. ➡ Only half of Black entrepreneurs meet their non-financial aims, compared to nearly 70% of White entrepreneurs. ➡More than a third (37%) of Black female business owners report making no profit last year, compared to 16% of White male business owners. "Success without fulfillment is the greatest failure." During the closing session of the America's Credit Unions (CUNA) GAC, we had the pleasure of hearing from the former professional snowboarder and five-time Olympian, Shaun White. Shaun's experience as a pro-athlete needing to consistently to perform under pressure, offered some invaluable tips for credit union leaders as well. He touched on topics such as: creating #consistency and the importance of remaining #focused, while challenging oneself to continually raise the bar. All very relevant for those also operating in the fast-moving space of financial technology. But there was one quote that really stood out to me… "Success without fulfillment is the greatest failure".   While striving to be at the top of his game, Shaun repeatedly lost sight of those people in his inner circle - those that truly mattered to him.   Birthdays, family gatherings and other important moments were missed or forgotten. It was not intentional. His ambition made him so laser-focused on winning that he forgot about those that were cheering him on from the sidelines.   When he finally got to the top, and achieved everything that he worked so hard for, he turned around to see who was there to celebrate with him, only to realize that he had pushed everyone away - and that he had no one left to share it with.   Work hard and dedicate yourself fully to your ambitions, but always find the time for those that you care about. For those of you lucky enough, call your parents and siblings - reconnect with your family and old friends.   Make time for those you care about.
