I learned a lot during this event, from all panels including the one I joined. It was interesting to see how our experiences and advice were similar, across industries and business size. A few common take away's included: * Plan in advance and build your business with an exit in mind - things to think about include - one that doesn't rely on YOU totally, create structure in your finances and records (it makes it much easier later on), build a strong team so you have depth and succession, build a revenue model that is attractive. * Get support externally - mentors, advisors and for us a game changer was appointing a Chair / board. It has to be the right person or people ( thank you Conor Walsh!!!) * Get support internally - bring in ops and administration to free you up to lead and grow the business * Delegate - to develop your leaders and build succession, and also to free your time congratulations to Saffron Business Forum for another great event. Juneteenth. A landmark event to culminate the day the enslaved learned they were free in Galveston, Texas, a full 2 years after Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation address. My ancestors. They endured. Today is my 5 year anniversary of declaring my professional freedom and announcing the launch of Momentum Risk Management, after six months of planning an exit; I returned from a Caribbean vacation, cleaned out my office, left my work laptop, my security badge & left the corporate headquarters of my firm. In the 5 years since beginning this company, what I’ve learned, there is really no class for. Nothing could prepare me for beginning a company 6 months before a world pandemic. 😷 There were days where I truly thought I’d leapt out, to my death. I kept fighting for myself & my brand because I KNEW there were people who thought I’d fail. It was fuel. There is a loneliness that is inherent to entrepreneurship. But there is also a fulfillment of autonomy that is sometimes the only tangible thing I can grasp, when the days are gruelingly hard. I am in charge of my life. I choose what and how. I’ve built something that has allowed me a life I dreamed of when I was a little girl. I can continue to build this, or I have an asset that has a capital valuation that I can sell. I can start as many businesses as I desire to. I have overcome significant challenge and most of my fears. I know the statistics of how black businesses are under capitalized, under resourced and under represented- and while there’s all kind of valid data points: by working hard, adapting, embracing and expanding my knowledge, all while placing my trust and a tremendous amount of faith in God, I’m STILL defying trends and odds. God has shown me my own power. Who could prepare for pandemics, family & friends deaths, family illnesses, attrition, the most disruptive insurance industry in a generation fueled by climate change and, did I say a pandemic? When people told me no, I did. I’m still here.. I understand the phrase “in the knick of time,” in a way most could never. My belief is that I AM…..and I CAN. Thank you to my husband, Jay Alston for being invested fully in my dreams. You’ve been my biggest fan and held me upright. You’ve wiped my tears, been my rock, my producer, my advocate and my confidant. You are my partner in life and in business. If I say, I need anything- my mother and my very first friend stops what she’s doing and make sure I have what I need to keep DOING. Her prayers & her support are felt. Thank you to my tribe. My very best friends for their love and sisterhood. Thank you to my former partners for starting this journey with me…, thanks to everyone who has supported my brand, sent a referral, invited me to speak, asked for counsel, said my name out loud, or become a client. In the first 2-5 years, 70% of businesses fail. Well, I’m STILL here. I’m now amongst the 1% of black women business owners. And I’m just getting started! Thriving 💡, SKA
