NCUA Approves Expansion of “Qualified Charity” to Veterans Organizations Earlier this year, Defense Credit Union Council (DCUC) and NAFCU (National Association of Federally-Insured Credit Unions) sent a joint letter to the NCUA Board. In the letter, we asked the NCUA to amend the definition of a “qualified charity” as it relates to Charitable Donation Accounts (CDAs) in Part 721.3 of NCUA regulations to include 501(c)(19) veterans’ organizations. Today, our efforts were a great success!   The NCUA's decision to grant this revision will not only lessen previous restrictions defense credit unions faced when contributing to veterans' organizations but will also provide all credit unions with more opportunity to better serve their veteran members and communities!   DCUC will continue working with each of our member credit unions alongside other veteran service organizations when advocating for the financial prosperity of our Nation's veterans. Lastly, DCUC would like to thank NAFCU for their help in drafting several joint letters, and for their consistent advocacy efforts, along with Abound Credit Union, TruStage, the National Credit Union Foundation (NCUF), and the Credit Union National Association (CUNA). The Covenant is a national responsibility involving government, businesses, local authorities, charities and the public. Since 2011, organisations have been making their pledge to support members of the Armed Forces community who work in their business or access their products and services. The level of support depends on the size and nature of the organisation, but typically includes policies that: encourage reserve service; support employment of veterans and service spouses/partners; and give the Armed Forces community a fair deal on commercial products and services. We must stand together and put an end to veteran suicide, soldier, and military family suicide. A recent study shows our veteran suicide rate is actually 2.4% higher than the VA estimates, the new rate is roughly 40-44 veterans that die per day by suicide and self harm injury. Our 3rd quarter DoD numbers show we are losing roughly 9-10 active, reserve, and national guards members each day by suicide. We have to bring these number down. While one person may not make a difference, we believe those that band together can and will! Suicide needs to become a thing of the past! As another anniversary of the avoidable Abbey Gate disaster approaches, let’s solemnly remember the 13 Brave Service members who lost their lives during the disorganized & chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan. Their courage and dedication remain etched in our collective memory: A stark reminder of the high-cost of freedom and the enduring spirit of those brave enough to serve in our Nation's Armed Services. Even three years on, no one in the command chain or government bureaucracy has been held accountable. Not one single person. And despite eyewitness testimony and conflicting reports, the government maintains that there was no firefight between our forces and terrorists during the immediate aftermath, and that the tragedy was unavoidable. These narratives only deepen the need for accountability and transparency. We all continue to seek justice and answers. With elections on the horizon, the question of accountability remains pressing. Why hasn't anyone been held responsible for the events that led to such a devastating loss? As citizens, it’s our duty to demand answers and ensure that the sacrifices of our service members are not in vain. It's past time we reflect not just on the past, but on our role in shaping the future. Will this election bring the accountability we seek? It's up to us to decide. Military working dogs are elite #warriors, trained by the best, but what happens when it’s time to #retire? Prior to the passing of “Robby’s Law” in 2000, many MWD’s would be #euthanized once they were no longer able to #serve. This law allows previous handlers, law enforcement, and even qualified civilians to adopt these retired heroes. Almost 90% are adopted, but 10% are unable to be adopted and subsequently #euthanized because of their #aggression. After years of #combat, sniffing out IED’s, and tackling Taliban #insurgents, these old dogs are not the same playful puppies they once were. This is a great country, and we must #not #give #up on those who have fought our wars, regardless of if they have 2 legs or 4. Nonprofits like the Warrior Dog Foundation give these dogs a second chance, and we all know they’ve earned it.
