The #PostOfficeEnquiry first day of evidence from their former CEO Paula Vennells and the KC continues to identify the mulititude of operational and governance failures. One of the surprises today that as Network Director with responsibility for all the branches she didn’t know about the size or capabilities of the ‘Post Office Investigation Branch”, and Internal Audit. If this is truly the case it raises even more questions about the effectiveness of both roles. Ultimately Internal Audit and the Business Protection/Loss Prevention functions can help the operational team to highlight risks of losses, fraud, potential legal breaches and areas for operational efficiency improvements. Having the right controls and monitoring in place can reduce the number of potential investigations and prosecutions. It is obviously right that those commuting theft or fraud are dealt with but it is even more important that the organisation has an infrastructure that prevents honest people from being accused. If you have an open outlook. A passion to learn about the business and to understand the objectives and deliverables of your internal and external stakeholders - this really Is one of the basics! Leyton Morgan and I have discussed our experiences working together in multiple site retail and compared them to those seen at the Post Office. It helps to familiarize yourself with common restaurant schemes, such as inappropriate sales voids, fake vendors and cooked books. Intangible (intellectual) property theft is less common, but still possible. Consider integrating your accounting, inventory and sales systems, conduct thorough background checks, install video surveillance, and set up a confidential fraud hotline.
