We, Keelan Hensley and Kent Hensley, are ecstatic to launch Kham's Klub, Inc., a non-profit focused on elevating and empowering families with Autism. Our son, Kham, was diagnosed with Autism before the age of 2. We have experienced first-hand the challenges of navigating a complex environment and special needs diagnosis. As a family, we wake up with and go to bed with Autism. We have faced hurdle after hurdle and see so much opportunity to improve people’s understanding, engagement and action as it pertains to Autism Spectrum Disorder. We want to share our family experiences, learnings and approach to help others overcome what will surely be a challenging road. The reality is, it has taken an immeasurable amount of patience, persistence and perseverance to get where we are today. But, this isn’t about us. We want to bring together everyone impacted by Autism to drive monumental change. The government, insurance companies, medical facilities and even local support are not going to put all of the pieces together for families with Autism diagnosis. We are making it our mission to help families accelerate the diagnosis, navigate the intervention services and most importantly, know that there are people in the community who care and can assist. We need your support. As a 501(c)(3) organization, we need donors, volunteers and experts to assist in this endeavor. We have been contributing our own funds to date, but if we truly want to make an impact, we need an army of support. As we enter a new year, it is more important than ever to consider those who may be vulnerable and who are facing challenges that are often significant and enduring. We explore their stories in our recent paper titled “It Never Ends: Vulnerable Consumers’ Experiences of Persistent Liminality and Resource (Mis)Integration” which was recently published in the KBS Research Bulletin by the Kemmy Business School U.. Our study may be of particular interest to stakeholders engaged in health, education and public service provision and policy-making as well as charities, communities and families caring for children with additional needs. https://lnkd.in/eKgguWvS Our study highlights the difficulties that families with children who have additional needs such as Autism (ASD) and Down Syndrome experience and the challenges they face in accessing essential resources. Our paper underlines the acute need for augmented and dedicated services and supports for families. Super to work with great colleagues Johanna Gummerus and Carol Kelleher PhD on this important work. It’s #NeurodiversityCelebrationWeek which I only knew due to my friend Tami Harris sharing an interview she did on RNZ. It’s a great listen on the commute to/from work - as with all things awareness is key and I’ve taken some of the content from the NZDEN website to let you know a bit more about it: ” Many people in our community use neurodiversity as an umbrella term used to describe alternative thinking styles such as Dyslexia, DCD (Dyspraxia), Dyscalculia, Autism and ADHD. But regardless of labels, neurodiversity is about recognising those who think differently. And no matter whether you are a school, university or organisation you can benefit from different thinkers! Approximately 15-20% of population has a neurological difference. Instead of labelling people with deficits or disorders, when we use the term neurodiversity, we take a balanced view of an individual’s unique strengths and challenges. Many ‘challenges’ neurodivergent people face are more to do with the environment and systems they are placed in, often designed by a majority population.” As 15-20% of the population is impacted it’s likely you will have someone in your family, among your friends, colleagues or community that is neurodivergent. Have a listen, or pop onto some of the websites supporting neurodiversity and have a look. One of the biggest challenges facing America today is an epidemic of loneliness, isolation, and lack of connection. And it’s hitting young people the hardest. When facing a crisis as big as teen mental health, how do you know where to start? One way is by putting young people at the heart of the solution.    That’s why I am thrilled to announce that the Schultz Family Foundation is partnering with 11 states, Pinterest, AmeriCorps and America Forward to launch the country’s first Youth Mental Health Corps.    Corps members will spend a year in schools connecting their peers to support. Announcing BrainFutures' $1M Investment from the State of Maryland for our Youth Executive Functioning Program We're proud to share a monumental milestone in our efforts to advance equitable access to mental and brain health innovations. Thanks to the generous support from the state of Maryland, we've been awarded a $1 million dollar grant to implement an innovative Youth Executive Functioning Program in public schools across Howard County. Over half of the children living in the US are affected by adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), which can impair executive function skills. Youth executive functioning programs can boost cognitive function, support mental health and wellbeing, prepare students to learn more effectively, and can help counter some of the harmful, chronic effects of these experiences. Programs like these can empower youth and set them up for lifelong success and overall wellbeing.
