Events are the key beneficiary of a sustained upturn in total marketing spend, according to the latest Bellwether report from the IPA (Institute of Practitioners in Advertising). The quarterly study, which analyses marketers’ confidence and budget choices, found that the category of ‘events’ saw budget expansion in Q1 2024 of +23.1% from a previous +15.9% in Q4 2023, as companies continue to show a strong appetite for face-to-face engagement with customers. Managing your budget for a live event isn't just important—it's absolutely critical. It's both an art and a science. We're talking about taking the cash you expect to make and smartly putting 10% of that into advertising. But it's not always that easy! You've got to cut this pie into three big pieces: the announcement phase, when you're just getting the word out; when tickets go on sale, ; and the closing phase, right when you're about to roll out the red carpet. AND you’ve got to be nimble, ready to move those dollars around when needed based on performance in real-time Phase 1: The Announcement This is where you grab the megaphone and let everyone know what’s coming. It’s your first shot at catching their eye. Typically offering an incentive to opt-in to your marketing & be notified when tickets go on sale. Phase 2: Tickets On Sale Now, we’re in the thick of it. This is when and where you'''ll start seeing ticket sales coming in. Phase 3: The Final Countdown The event’s right around the corner, and this is your last chance to fill those seats. It’s about being smart with where you're putting your money from the very first phase and if done correctly you have enough of a budget to target last minute buyers. -- Flexibility is Key Here’s something I can't stress enough: be flexible. The world of live events is full of surprises. You might need to pivot your strategy on a dime, and you’ve got to be ready for that. Stick too rigidly to your plan, and you miss out on some golden opportunities. Bottom line? This isn’t just about throwing money at the problem and hoping it sticks. It's about strategic moves, understanding your audience, and knowing when to push harder and when to pull back. Mastering will make the difference between inconsistent attendance numbers & consistently drawing people out. This is how we help event partners.
