A staggering 67% of respondents cited the lack of gender-friendly (smaller-sized) safety equipment such as PPEs, safety harnesses, hard hats, etc., with 85% expressing concerns over the absence of maternity-friendly safety gear. 👷♀️ A Positive Step Towards Inclusive PPE in Construction 👷♀️ The construction industry is making strides towards inclusivity with the recent commitment by the Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS) to mandate the provision of women’s PPE across all its sites. This move aims to ensure that women have access to properly fitted and suitable sizes of PPE, addressing the challenges faced by many in the industry. Philip Sayer, head of assurance and challenge at CCS, emphasised the importance of improving inclusivity and diversity in construction, highlighting the scheme's role in promoting female-specific PPE provision. This initiative follows a survey by the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC), revealing the need for better-fitting PPE for women in the industry. Katy Robinson, Senior Project Manager at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, and NAWIC Yorkshire Campaign Manager, lauded the decision, emphasising that well-fitting PPE should be the minimum standard, not just the best practice. The move by CCS sets a positive example for the industry, encouraging other health and safety accreditations to follow suit. With women currently making up 15.8% of the construction industry, initiatives like the #PPEthatfits campaign by the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) are crucial in driving change and ensuring a safer working environment for all. Being a female in the material handling world, I am often in PPE. I see the labor shortages first hand as well as the increase in female workers. If you’re hiring females that are new to the construction or warehousing world, you should be extending an extra hand during the onboarding to ensure a safe work environment.
