It's World Mental Heath Awareness Week, so what do you do relax and get away from the everyday stress of modern life? For me I love to be outdoors, throw heavy weights about and support my sons in their passion for rugby. We are all different and what works for me won't be the same for you. Small actions can lead to big changes over time. Just keep at it as nothing which is good comes easy! Grateful to Swim England for giving me the space and time to talk about my experiences in the sport - the good and the bad! I don't see talking about our negative experiences as something that harms the sport. Of course, it's a shame that this (and worse) has been part of the experiences of many of us in sports. Being willing to listen to and share athlete stories is uncomfortable at times... but it's also the only way we can make positive change and improve the sport for the next generation. It's hugely important that we have these conversations about energy balance and availability for the health and well-being of all athletes. The new guides are a great tool to equip everyone to feel more comfortable and confident having those conversations. They're some of the most influential conversations that you can ever have with someone. Saying something, kindly, is better than saying nothing... and if you don't know where to start, start with the guidebook and have a conversation about it with the people in your environment! What do they think? Did they learn anything? Have they noticed these behaviours in themselves or others? As Mental Health Awareness Month draws to a close, let us pause and reflect on the life of Grayson Murray—a gifted golfer whose journey was marked by both triumphs and tribulations. His story serves as a reminder that mental health matters, and our compassion can make a difference. As a parent of a former collegiate golfer, I’ve witnessed firsthand the rollercoaster of emotions that golf can bring. Just like Grayson, who celebrated incredible highs with PGA Tour victories, he also grappled with his own inner demons. At Questco, we are taking small steps to become comfortable addressing our concerns about personal well-being with those we love. Just as we inquire about a simple injury, we are trying to normalize conversations about mental well-being. Kindness, understanding, and support—these are the cornerstones of a compassionate community. May Grayson’s legacy inspire us to be there for one another, to listen without judgment, and to extend a helping hand when needed.
