For more than 150 years, African American communities nationwide have commemorated the emancipation of the last enslaved people with celebrations and reflections. This day serves as a profound reminder of America's recognition of the end of slavery and the nation's ongoing commitment to equity, equality, and justice. "Silence in the face of injustice is complicity." - Desmond Tutu In our fast-paced and interconnected world, it is crucial to recognize that silence can indeed be interpreted as giving consent, especially when there are matters or issues that demand our attention and action. Remaining silent can perpetuate harmful situations and hinder progress towards positive change. As stated in Proverbs 31:8-9, "Open your mouth for the mute, for the rights of all who are destitute. Open your mouth, judge righteously, defend the rights of the poor and needy." This scripture highlights the importance of speaking up for those who cannot speak for themselves, advocating for justice, and defending the rights of the marginalized and vulnerable. We must remember that our words and actions have the power to make a difference. As we strive for a more inclusive and equitable society, let us not stay silent but instead use our voices to address systemic issues, promote dialogue, and work towards positive change.

Central Diversity Officer, University of Amsterdam; Philosopher @ Institute for Interdisciplinary Studies, UvA; Co-founder Keti Koti Dialogue Table.
In the US, February is Black Achievement Month. A rich and welcoming initiative that offers daily inspiration for meaningful actions is the Liberation Table, which has been inspired in many ways by our Keti Koti Tafel. I recommend taking a look at their initiative and guide, as it might inspire your celebation as well - check out the calendar for today's suggestion. Some years ago, Mercedes Zandwijken and I published a piece in which we proposed our dialogue table as a 'Juneteenth haggadah': a version of the Jewish passover celebration to comemmorate the abolition of slavery in a meaningful way. A motivated and creative group of black women - Benie N'Sumbu, Faith Zamble, Hillary Bridges, and Samantha Sims - had been inspired by our Keti Koti Table and developed in recent years their own version, which has become the Liberation Table. It consists also of a series of rituals and a symbolic meal that is shared by participants, like ours. What appears to be different is the role for interpersonal dialogue across the color line, that we've put central as a way to address the joined colonial and slavery legacy, which is not the case in the Liberation Table. The latter seems particularly aimed at the circle of family and friends, and is perhaps more similar to the Jewish passover table in that sense. Obviously, each context and aim can benefit from a tailored approach like this one - so you can yourself develop your own idiosyncratic version! https://lnkd.in/edC7y5QD Publication on the Keti Koti Table as a Juneteenth Haggadah: https://lnkd.in/exN_JBer #blackhistorymonth #ketikotitable #liberationtable #dialogue #juneteenth #abolition

Celebrate Freedom: Happy Juneteenth! Today, we honor Juneteenth, a significant day in American history marking the end of slavery. On June 19, 1865, the last enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, were finally informed of their freedom—more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. At HTF, we honor this day as a reminder of our enduring commitment to freedom and justice. As we reflect on this significant milestone, we also recognize that the fight against slavery continues. Today, we are dedicated to ending modern slavery and human trafficking, ensuring that freedom and dignity are upheld for all. Together, let's reflect on the past, recognize the progress made, and recommit to creating a future where freedom and equality are truly universal. Join us in commemorating Juneteenth by reaffirming our shared values of liberty, justice, and the pursuit of happiness for every individual. Together, we can build a future free from the bonds of modern slavery. #Juneteenth #FreedomDay #CelebrateFreedom #SocialJustice #BlackHistory #EqualityForAll #EndModernSlavery #LibertyAndJusticeForAll #JuneteenthCelebration #FreedomHonored #LibertyAndJustice #HonorHistory
