🤗INCLUSION🤗 Celebrating inclusion and taking action to create inclusive workplaces shouldn’t just be reserved for #nationalinclusionweek You’ll know by now that following a focus on ‘Parity in the Profession’, and the good news stories of 2023 where further barriers have been removed, CILEX’s focus for 2024 and beyond turns to the workplace and making this a better environment for our members. A perfect opportunity then to have more discussion about inclusion in the workplace for CILEX members. To celebrate where this is working well and share good practise. To shine a spotlight on problem areas where CILEX members feel excluded and/or are treated differently to colleagues and promote change. I see so many posts about ED&I ‘champions’ in the workplace. It’s easy to talk the talk, to tick a box, but are firms/organisations really walking the walk? We all have a part to play to make sure our workplaces are fully inclusive. 🗣️For CILEX MEMBERS to have a voice and speak up. To advocate for their route to qualification, whichever stage they may be at. To raise concerns with their employer. To challenge unacceptable language and behaviour. Sometimes easier said than done so please do reach out if we can assist. I’ve seen several posts where CILEX members have set up internal networks at work to connect and champion each other through their studies and beyond. Again, if you need anything from us, reach out. 🗣️For EMPLOYERS to ensure that every member of staff has an opportunity to develop and grow in their careers. To look at their career development frameworks and the language used around job titles and vacancies. To educate all staff on the various routes to qualification and the many benefits of having a diversity rich work force. 🗣️For SOLICITORS, BARRISTERS and other LEGAL/NON-LEGAL PROFESSIONALS to support their CILEX colleagues. 🗣️For RECRUITMENT CONSULTANTS to be fully informed of this alternative route to qualification as a lawyer. To be having these conversations with their contacts and actively recommending CILEX members if not initially requested. I regularly talk about a united legal profession. Surely, we are stronger together when we champion and support each other regardless of our route to qualification? I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again (louder for those at the back!), surely the focus should be on what we bring to the table rather than how we got there? If everybody takes just one action this week, like a drop in the ocean this will have a ripple effect.
