Thanks to Flanders Make, and all the participants in the Flanders Make Robotics Demo Day yesterday in Leuven: we had so much fun! Our demonstrator in the picture below challenges a common belief in the robotics community that gearboxes with high gear ratios cannot be easily backdriven. Backdriving our 125:1 R2poweR gearbox by hand, using a wheel connected to the gearbox output, several visitors reached yesterday speeds >10.000 rpm on the central shaft of the gearbox... (the record of the day was finally established at 14.000 rpm). Gearbox backdrivability is a pivotal aspect of robot safety, while high ratios allow robots to become lighter.
