We've all complained about it at one time or another: another Hollywood remake, another sequel, another predictable and formulaic story, or worse, plotholes you can drive a semi through! "No one in that position would ever..." What? Run in heels? Split up in a scary situation? Ask "what do we do now?" or make an asinine decision based solely on being "pure of heart." We've all been there too many times to count. So, what's the solution? Start making your OWN movies! Tell YOUR stories! It's easier than you think: https://lnkd.in/gEWEB5pq

"50% Black, 50% Japanese... 1000% me" If you haven't had the chance to watch it yet, we highly recommend HBO's documentary '1000% Me: Growing Up Mixed.' This thought-provoking film explores the joys and challenges of growing up mixed-race in the U.S., shining a light on how young people navigate issues of race, culture, and identity. A powerful reminder that embracing diversity is essential for creating a more inclusive and harmonious society. We give it a 5-star rating!

https://lnkd.in/ewU5v-5u My Mum, who grew up in America, loves watching the latest videos from CBS Sunday Morning, and I liked this video she sent me to watch (Jaws was an absolute production nightmare, and Spielberg was terrified that this would end his career!): 🙂🎞⭐️ The most interesting thing to me about the history of the blockbuster is that I'm personally not a fan of the idea of associating a film with the specific time period that it was made in (outside, perhaps, of being aware of how different technology was back then!) - just like how Shakespeare's plays continue to be set in different time periods and locations, films can still be so inspirational that you'll probably forget how long ago they were made! 🙂 There IS one thing I've always been fascinated with, and that's Disney's history of releasing their now-most celebrated films first during Thanksgiving (the time when all the families are together), like Beauty & the Beast and Toy Story, and eventually during the summer (when, frankly, kids have even more time to experience something more than once!) like The Lion King and Inside Out! 🙂 Pretty much the same thing with museums, zoos and other attractions where the best times to have family events are during the school holidays, when parents are finding out what they can do with their kids! 🙂 I remember critics saying because the big studios are releasing their big-budget spectacles as early as March (because they continue to want to make fewer films with bigger budgets), the summer blockbuster season isn't as special as it once was! Still though, many of Disney and Pixar's films will continue to grow in popularity YEARS after their original theatrical release, ever since Disney realised with the invention of home video that it would become a much more efficient source of revenue (that can help fuel future projects! 😊) than they ever realised with just limited theatrical re-releases every 7-10 years! #marketing #audiencetargeting

I was thinking about this the other day - Disney’s acquisition of the rest of Hulu and doubling down on ESPN (as well as the Fox purchase) are all signals that mgmt isn’t confident in the growth prospects for Disney, Marvel, and Star Wars. Iger keeps saying they need to focus, so the easy decision should be to focus on their core brands. Instead they are cutting back their investment in core IP (less content) and buying $10b of more of general entertainment. Problem is, Hulu and ESPN don’t drive Parks or merch, which are the profit centers. Again I think it’s obvious the solution is to divest of linear and buy a games publisher. Expand into a new entertainment vertical that’s bigger than film + TV while acquiring / creating new IP.
In a skewed irony, DC actually won the DC vs. Marvel war because Disney is now almost entirely dependant on MCU movies, while Warner Bros. doesn’t need DC flicks for box office glory.

Why Warner Dropped the Anvil on ‘Coyote Vs. Acme’ I don't expect there will be many opportunities in my lifetime for me to see legendary cartoon characters in a movie about a product lawsuit. And it looks like the last hope of that has now been shelved. So for all of those lawyers out there hoping to see if Warner Bros. got the legal jargon correct, you won't get that chance. For a few years now, the release of the Coyote Vs. Acme has been the subject of on again off again negotiations between a variety of industry players (for more detail on those, see: https://lnkd.in/gGs6UZfx). But now it looks like it won't see the light of day. This article from The Ringer goes into the possible tax and strategic reasons for not releasing a production you have completed. Spoiler alert: if you are holding out hope that one day you will actually see it, don't read the last paragraph of the article. (Thanks to Mark Ellis for the cartoon update on the cartoon movie).
