As philanthropy officers, our first priority is to connect individuals in the community to the health care organization's top strategic priorities and facilitate donors’ gifts to help accomplish their philanthropic goals. To accomplish this, we need to ideally spend 80 percent of our time visiting and engaging with major gift prospects and donors, which includes planning solicitation or stewardship activities and strategies. To be successful in philanthropy, we need to be thinking about our donors as partners towards a common goal. Those who support our organizations do so because they believe in the mission and wish to see the organization be successful. They want to be partners with us as those successes are realized and they want to know the impact their support has provided. For donors to feel like our partners, there must be a level of mutual respect that starts in our philanthropy offices with culture, specifically centered on gratitude. Culture is defined by our leaders and shaped by our common language, behaviors and attitudes. Think about the language your team uses when you talk about philanthropy. Is it rooted in gratitude? Yea it’s a five minute video, who watches those anymore! However, if you followed us over the course of Serve Week 2024 (The Ocho) this is an awesome wrap up and great work by the team. We try and use LinkedIn to open a window into our culture. And while Foundry Commercial isn’t perfect and we will always have work to do in pursuit of our standards, I think this is one of the things we get really right. Donor fatigue: Many of you have heard of it. Many of you have experienced it from both the organization and donor sides. Donor fatigue, however, is preventable from an organizational standpoint. The concept is relatively simple. To avoid donor fatigue, connect with donors by discussing their passions. Making the connection is vital. Your philanthropy teams are the community connectors. You represent your organization’s mission and should align your goals with like-minded individuals willing to help advance communities and the needs within them.
