Department of Interior looks to expand solar energy development throughout the West   The Department of the Interior has updated its roadmap for solar energy development across the West, which is designed to expand solar energy production in more Western states and make renewable energy siting and permitting on America’s public lands more efficient, according to a press release issued by the agency’s Bureau of Land Management (BLM). The BLM also announced the next steps for several renewable projects in Arizona, California and Nevada, which represent more than 1,700 megawatts of potential solar generation and 1,300 megawatts of potential battery storage capacity. Since January 2021, the BLM has approved 47 clean energy projects and permitted 11,236 megawatts of wind, solar and geothermal energy on public lands, which is enough to power more than 3.5 million homes. The updated roadmap and BLM’s solar energy undertakings are in furtherance of the Biden administration’s goal of a 100 percent clean electricity grid by 2035. In 2023, corporate power purchase agreements (PPAs) for solar and wind energy reached a record high, according to BloombergNEF. Corporations globally announced 46 GW of solar and wind PPAs, marking a 12% increase from 2022. The surge in activity was primarily driven by Europe, where corporate PPA volumes grew by 74% to 15.4 GW. Improving economics in key regions, coupled with companies' clean energy goals, were cited as the main drivers behind this growth. According to BloombergNEF’s just released 1H 2024 US Clean Energy Market Outlook, Texas promises to top the charts in terms of solar, wind and battery storage deployments in the period from 2024 to 2035.
