Even globally renowned artists like Jennifer Lopez are facing difficulties in today's concert industry, which is manifested by her recent struggles to sell tour tickets. There's a big change coming in entertainment! A recent Business Insider story does a good job reporting. "JLo is apparently having a hard time selling tickets," the author said, which led to the cancellation of several tour dates despite rebranding her tour as a greatest hits showcase. Other artists like The Black Keys and Troye Sivan are experiencing underwhelming ticket sales, suggesting a broader trend of market challenges. Why has this happened? The phenomenon is partly due to an oversaturated market where a multitude of artists have simultaneously returned to touring post-pandemic in an attempt to recoup losses. "You'd never before had a moment in time where all the horses lined up at the starting gate and they all went out on the road at the same time," said Gary Witt, CEO of The Pabst Theater Group. This congestion has diluted audience attendance and heightened competition among artists. Economic factors further complicate the landscape, with soaring ticket prices dampening consumer enthusiasm. David "5-1" Norman, a touring industry veteran, points out, "Ticket prices are just astronomical right now," which adds a significant financial burden to potential concert-goers. There are also major concerns about Live Nation and Ticketmaster exerting monopoly power on the pricing. Artists and promoters are adapting by rethinking their tour strategies, such as downsizing venues or combining forces with other acts to attract larger crowds. It's definitely not the end of entertainment, but a shift in the way that the sector works. #entertainment #jlo #artists #livenation https://lnkd.in/eG9iH-GS

There's been a lot of chatter about the post-Covid thirst for live entertainment abating as some major artists struggle to sell out shows. But on the other hand, Live Nation reported its biggest ever quarter in May and announce that the company is on track for a record year in 2024. (Live Nation said that attendance at its shows nearly doubled for international artists across top 50 global tours compared to five years ago.) Here's the thing: a small number of elite artists like Beyoncé and Taylor Swift are driving massive ticket sales. For everyone else, touring is complicated and always has been. Jennifer Lopez and the Black Keys overestimated their staying power and canceled poorly selling concerts. But Olivia Rodrigo? Her shows have sold out, and tickets on the aftermarket are through the roof. Billie Eilish? Same. And it's impossible to find a ticket for Chapell Roan. All of those artists could play football stadiums if they wanted to do so, but they are not, and so their shows are selling out. The wild card in the deck: ticket fees from Live Nation are so bad that you can find competitive prices on the aftermarket. That's why the Department of Justice has sued Live Nation. If someone is on the fence about seeing Jennifer Lopez, paying excessive fees is just enough to dissuade them. I worry about the lesser known bands trying to make a name for themselves by touring small clubs. They can barely afford the costs of touring amid inflationary pressures. (They have to pay for their own travel costs just like you and I do -- and you know how expensive travel is these days.) They are the have-nots who cost maybe $20 to see at your local club and are playing their hearts out. If you want to support the touring industry and you are fortunate enough to live near a city where options are plentiful, give the lesser knowns a try. The big-name stars will be just fine. #Touring #LITrendingTopics #TheInsider #Music #Concerts https://lnkd.in/gk3KYA5w

I think it is a fair point to argue that performers and concert-goers alike (pointedly those that travel extensively for shows) can be considered hyper-consumers of energy and material goods, and hyper-emitters of carbon dioxide. In the article linked below, posted yesterday by Forbes, it discusses the seeming hypocrisy of younger generations being carbon-fueled climate activists. This article presents heavy questions about what climate ethics we value when there are vested interests involved. https://lnkd.in/gk2tvuMy Taylor Swift's total flight emissions for this year weigh in at 8,293.54 tons, compared to the average global per capita of 4.3 tons in 2020. The footprint of her air travel is near to 2000x the global average (all stats were taken from the article, sourced from Yard and the World Bank). Yet, no vocal opposition has been made by any Swiftie thus far. I believe these statics uncover a dirty truth about the complications that humanity faces during its quest for environmental salvation, and speaks to the urgent need to update our value preferences.
Pop star Taylor Swift announced Thursday she’s adding another 15 North American stops on her highly sought-after Eras tour next fall, as the incredibly profitable tour reaches nearly 150 shows worldwide.

Gigflation Taylor Swift's Eras Tour Film wasn’t just a record-breaking concert movie when it came out last Friday: it also gave many of her devoted fans a chance to guarantee they got a good seat for ~$20 if they missed out on tickets for the real thing... and don’t fancy forking out $11,000 for resale spots. It’s not just Swifties who’ve been suffering from the ticketing uptick in recent years, either. The average price to go and see one of the top 100 North American tours in 2023 — from Sheeran to Springsteen — will now set you back $120.11, according to data from Pollstar cited by the WSJ. For context, tickets for the same sort of shows cost $62.50 on average in 2009. That’s showbiz Despite rising ticket prices and long-standing issues with online vendors and resellers, American gig-goers haven’t been dissuaded from getting their entertainment fix. Indeed, the rip-roaring success of shows from artists like Swift and Beyonce led the Bank of America to highlight live gigs as the clear star of the media and entertainment industry in its recent “Funflation In Full Force” report. With concert culture flying in the wake of summer’s much-reported Barbenheimer boom, will 2023 be remembered (say it quietly) as the year that America got its appetite for in-person entertainment and experiences back after an elongated pandemic slump?
