The biggest part of my tax career was spent in-house. From that period, I still recall vividly the humongous amount of workstreams that I was orchestrating, or that I was part of. I am talking about all sorts of recurring tax jobs for which there is a complex interplay between the tax team and its internal and external stakeholders. These workstreams are about compliance or managing global tax obligations. But also about tax accounting and reporting, or operationalising your transfer pricing (eg quarterly intercompany recharges). The amount of work that year-over-year further increased. My memories from these activities are still today dominated by stress, frustration and feelings of endless firefighting. Here are some of the root causes: – Unstructured or unrepeatable processes – Manual chasing of stakeholders to get the work done – Dreadful monitoring of internal and external deadlines, and the overall back planning of steps  – Limited possibilities to implement controls – Absence of real-time process overview, or audit trails – No possibility of capturing essential data, documents and KPIs from the workstreams – No identification of process risks – No leveraging of process learning The remarkable thing is that, very frequently, I hear the same struggles being put forward by in-house tax teams.
