Doesn’t it suck when great people leave your organization? Sure does. But today, as Brett Davis moves on to lead the NIL Collective at the College of Charleston, I can't help but emphasize the positivity in transitions for our team members. Brett, who began as an executive assistant in operations, has been a shining example of how one's journey within a company can evolve into an exciting new chapter elsewhere. Brett's unwavering dedication to the company’s vision saw him grow into the role of Director of Out of Home Advertising and Community Engagement. His impact was profound, overseeing our hundreds of billboards across three states, community events in the more than 20 communities where we have offices, and pioneering our NIL Agency Program. Brett's departure is not a loss for us, but rather a celebration of his growth and success. It's a testament to how our organization fosters talent and prepares individuals for greater challenges. His departure to lead the NIL Collective is a testament to the opportunities for growth within our company and we know he will be successful because he has developed the skills to do it. This departure is a reminder for us that while farewells might seem bittersweet, they are often a testament to the positive impact our organization has on individuals' lives and careers. Embracing and celebrating these moments is crucial in cultivating a culture that values and encourages professional development and growth. The job market is tough, but so am I! 2023 had its challenges. I experienced a huge start-up layoff and several final round interview disappointments. But this has not discouraged me or slowed me down in my hunt for the right position. 2024 is THE year! I've always been an introvert, finding it difficult to start a conversation, establish relationships, or get along with people. I lived with a misconception that people would be attracted to me based on my personality. "I don't need much help; I can do most of it alone," I'd say when I saw no one around. Opportunities were passing me by because of my personality. My mates were growing, and I was still trying to figure out what they were doing, right there on my own without moving closer to ask them. When I discovered more about the implications or further consequences of my actions, coupled with reading a book that emphasized the importance of relationships, "How to Win Friends and Influence People," I decided to break out of my shell and start relating with people. I intentionally chatted with people, walked up to some, and started conversations with them. LinkedIn made me realize that you cannot go far or come across the opportunities you seek without networking and creating connections with people of different levels. My decision to relate with people exposed me to career advancement opportunities, learning and growth opportunities, brand-building strategies, and mentorship opportunities. It's been an interesting and amazing journey all along. Don't think you can walk or run alone. Be intentional about building quality relationships with people, not one-sided relationships, but mutual ones where both parties benefit. It's not all about you... Remember, you can still be an introvert and create relationships with people. You just need to break out of your shell, learn, and implement what you've learned. This weekend, don't just sit around or try staying alone. Visit your loved ones, call your people, and start conversations with people both online and offline. It's not that hard; know that you are capable of doing it. Happy weekend, family! Don't forget to go to church today. It's the last Sunday of October. There were about thirty of us packed inside the conference room, and not enough chairs to have everyone sit around the ginormous table. A man ran into the office, frazzled, and said, “I need a volunteer.” We all looked up. Some shook their head; others looked at each other or the rug. “I need someone to find a 6-inch squirrel, and I need it back here A-SAP.” There was a pause. No one responded. What did he want? My hand shot in the air. Nervously, I said, “I’ll do it.” That was my first day interning at NBCUniversal’s Late Night with Conan O'Brien, and that was one of many requests (don’t even get me started on my Max Weinberg story) and pinch-me moments from the summer of 2005. While some may chalk up that experience as just one of the many odd jobs expected of a free-labor gopher for a late night talk show, I saw that moment as something more, a mindset that continues to help guide me in every meeting, everyday, every role. It’s not complicated: To be #successful, show up and put in the effort. Be the first to raise your hand. Volunteer. Take on the task no one else seems to want — and may seem impossible. By being the first to say “yes,” you will be noticed and valued for your contributions and you will be the first person senior management will turn to when they need something done. So don’t look down, shake your head, or turn away. Next time someone asks you to do something or you see an opportunity, speak up and get your own 🐿️.
