Let's decomplex it. ➔ PR was originally coined as propaganda used for religion-spreading; ➔ It was later used as a political tool to influence public opinion and build personal branding for the politicians; ➔ Then it evolved as means to generate free publicity through buzz-worthy activities; ➔ By the 20th century, PR was first used as a communications tool between the corporation and the public to protect and manage the company's reputation; ➔ PR concept was later further extended to influencing consumer behaviors; Today, PR means so much more than what it used to be as the practice continues to be standardized and a plethora of terms are defined. It is: - strategic communications - content marketing - social media marketing - influencer relations - analyst relations - crisis communications and so much more… Nevertheless, PR’s core lies in delivering powerful “messages” to the public through influential/relevant mediums to achieve business and reputational goals for organizations and individuals. Knowing what PR means to your organization is key to using it effectively as a strategic tool.
