World Brain Day is celebrated annually on 22 July to increase awareness about brain health and neurological illnesses. The theme for World Brain Day 2023 is "Brain Health and Disability: Leave No One Behind." This subject emphasises the importance of ensuring that everyone, regardless of ability, has access to high-quality brain health care. The World Federation of Neurology's (WFN) Public Awareness and Advocacy Committee initially suggested World Brain Day in 2013. The World Federation of Neurologists (WFN) is an international organisation of neurologists that represents more than 120 national neurological organisations. The WFN's purpose in establishing World Brain Day is to increase awareness of brain health and neurological illnesses, as well as to support research and education in these areas. Researchers at the University of Iowa, supported by the The National Institutes of Health, have identified a brain region, the amygdala, that may be linked to breathing failure after seizures in people with severe, medication-resistant epilepsy, a condition known as SUDEP, the leading cause of death in this group. The study suggests that postictal apnea, the loss of breathing following a seizure, may be related to a lack of awareness of the need to breathe, possibly due to the brain's inability to detect rising carbon dioxide levels. The research reveals potential connections between the amygdala, brainstem, and breathing control, shedding light on SUDEP and its prevention, but further studies are needed for confirmation. #Epilepsy #SUDEP #BrainResearch
Failure to breathe persists without air hunger or alarm following amygdala seizures

Tomorrow is World Brain Day! Facilitated by the World Federation of Neurology, this day is an opportunity to spread awareness and education on different brain related topics from health to disorders. This year’s theme is Brain Health and Disability: Leave No One Behind. Worldwide, it is estimated that over a billion people live with a disability, and a large proportion of this number is attributed to neurological diseases. The WFN aims to bring awareness to this theme through five different aspects: prevention, awareness, access, education, and advocacy. Brain disabilities can be prevented, treated, and rehabilitated. People with disabilities experience an array of complex issues, and the goal of the WFN’s initiative is to help break down some of the barriers for these people and take a step in the right direction towards positive change. To explore this year’s theme and learn more about how you can get involved, visit wfneurology.org. #worldbrainday
