The national research ethics review system would not succeed without the hard work and dedication of our committee members. In 2023 alone, they delivered over 600 single national ethics opinions for new studies and substantial modifications, across the medicinal product, medical device and in vitro diagnostic research areas. First to say thank you to all of you who take the time to listen to the podcast so far. In the latest episode you can learn about challenges that Ethics Committees face like artificial intelligence studies which require special knowledge that ECs don't necessarily have. I am also touching on topics like the rising ECs fees in Europe which leave many small and mid size companies struggling and many more. Those who have listen to the previous podcasts know that I always finish with some recommendations on how to improve processes. #clinicalresearch #ethicscommittee

Dr Francesco Tava, Associate Professor of Philosophy, has recently been appointed to the STRONG-AYA Ethics and Regulatory Advisory Board. STRONG-AYA is a new, interdisciplinary, multi-stakeholder European network to improve healthcare services, research and outcomes for adolescents and young Adults (AYA) with cancer, defined as individuals aged 15-39 years at cancer diagnosis, funded by the European Union and UKRI Innovate UK. AYAs with cancer form a unique group; they face age-specific issues (e.g. infertility, unemployment, financial problems) and decreased quality of life due to cancer and its treatment. Unlike dedicated healthcare and trials for paediatric cancer patients, AYA-specific healthcare services are scarce and vary across Europe. The aim of STRONG-AYA is to set up a value-based healthcare research ecosystem to develop data-driven, interactive policy and visualization tools that bring, in co-creation with all stakeholders including patients, novel insights into AYA healthcare.

Would it be ethically right to deliberately expose human volunteers to infectious substances, in the name of accelerating the advancement of therapeutic drugs and vaccines? A workshop held on 8 April, organised by the NUS Centre for Biomedical Ethics at #NUSMedicine and the National Centre for Infectious Diseases (NCID), brought together researchers, clinicians and bioethicists to discuss the ethics of such human challenge studies, the ethical challenges involved and approaches to overcome them. Renowned ethicist, Prof Peter Singer, Ira W. DeCamp Professor of Bioethics in the University Center for Human Values, Princeton University, discussed the principle of risk parity at the workshop and examined the notion of ethical challenges. Do clinicians have a duty to participate in pragmatic clinical trials? "Clinicians have good moral and professional reasons to contribute to pragmatic clinical trials (PCTs). We argue that clinicians have a defeasible duty to participate in this research that takes place in usual care settings and does not involve substantive deviation from their ordinary care practices." What are your thoughts? #ClinicalTrials #Participation #Bioethics

Navigating Challenges: Ethical Considerations in Oncology Research and Treatment Have you ever wondered that ethical considerations will play a major role in research and treatment? Let's explore how these concerns are important in oncology research and treatment! 🧭 Navigating the ethical landscape • Research ethics encompass a set of rules, regulations, principles and norms which have to be followed to perform any kind of research. • Ethical considerations in oncology mainly focus on diagnosis and detection of cancer. • Oncology research involves a set of sophisticated rules which have to be followed. • It involves voluntary participation of patients, informed consent, anonymity, confidentiality, the potential for harm and results communication. 🚦 Navigating Research Challenges Oncology research major challenges such as Balancing benefits against risks, conducting biopsies, addressing therapeutic misconceptions, and accurate reporting pose significant hurdles. • The use of biological samples raises privacy, consent, and equitable access concerns. 💊 Ethics in Treatment: FDA Approved Oncology treatment involves FDA-approved drugs for patients. Challenges arise during the targeted therapies and their access along with data sharing and collaboration. It also requires responsible conduct of research. 📚 Integrity in Publication : • In oncology research, maintaining research integrity and publication ethics is of utmost importance. • This involves following ethical guidelines and principles throughout the research process, including data collection, analysis, and reporting. • Additionally, ethical oversight is provided by institutional review boards (IRBs) to ensure that research involving human subjects is conducted ethically with applicable regulations. • IRBs review research protocols, assess potential risks and benefits, and protect the rights and welfare of research participants. • These measures help maintain the credibility and reliability of oncology research publications. Despite these challenges, embracing ethics is the bedrock of progress. Sharing discoveries and knowledge is not just commendable, but essential for the collective advancement in oncology research and treatment. Let's continue to navigate these ethical waters, advancing towards a brighter, more compassionate future in oncology! 🌍🌿 Picture source : Social science space . #OncologyEthics #ResearchIntegrity #EthicalTreatment #PatientRights #CancerCareEthics #OncologyDilemmas #CancerResearchEthics #Bioethics #MedicalAdvancements
