Next week Iʻll be serving as the host for Fish Pono community launch event gathering ocean-minded artists + advocates to protect our local coral reefs, by protecting the hebivorous fish that garden them. 🐟 As water people, simply advocating to abstain from seafood as a conservation solution undermines the relationship with the reef for subsistence, social cohesion, + cultural connection. The real solution is far more nuanced, requiring us to ask harder questions as individuals: Who caught my fish? How was it caught? Where did it travel from? Can I choose an invasive species? These questions arenʻt always easy to answer on the mainland, but in Hawaiʻi, they are far more accessible. Fish Pono ambassadors represent this nuance through their own reciprocity with our reefs, and learning from them is one way we can all be more ocean-minded in our food choices. At the Hempel Foundation, we are proud to champion these environmental heroes by fostering capacity building and knowledge sharing. 🤝 Last year, in collaboration with the Whitley Fund for Nature, we supported the Winner Network Development Program in Brazil. Their survival precariously hangs on an ever-thinning thread. As travel curators deeply committed to authenticity and sustainability, we consider it a duty to be more than just spectators in this unfolding narrative. We're proud to announce that in the coming weeks, we will be launching an exciting initiative aimed at supporting African Wild Dog conservation. It's our way of transforming our values into action. 🌊 Realizing Progress in Ocean Conservation: A Testament to Time and Teamwork 🌊 As a former leader of Protect Our Future, it's nothing short of amazing to see the seeds we planted in 2019 bear fruit. Our collective dream took shape when George Town Harbour was first nominated as a Hope Spot by Mission Blue / Sylvia Earle Alliance—an achievement reflecting that progress truly demands both work and patience. It's a bittersweet moment as I share this news from afar, due to my current academic pursuits. However, the incredible current leaders along with the representation by Chloe, with whom I led POF, leave no room for anything but pride and admiration. During her visit to Cayman, the legendary Sylvia Earle underscored a powerful message: "Saving the ocean is a team sport." This resonates deeply with our ethos at POF, where we've been advocating for Cayman's reefs since 2017. Over 200 attendees, including educators, students, and notable community figures, were there to witness a movement gaining momentum. Although I couldn't be there in person, my heart swelled hearing about the event's success. Evie Sweetman and Chloe Bentick-Lalli, alongside Premier Wayne Panton, spoke powerfully, demonstrating the formidable leadership that will drive POF and our shared mission forward. The Hope Spot designation is not just a title—it's a commitment to protect, conserve, and engage the community. It's an embodiment of hope, and the event, graced by Dr. Earle's presence, was nothing less than inspirational. Join me in celebrating this monumental step in ocean conservation. Raising community awareness about the importance of caring for the environment is key for nature to continue developing normally. When visiting a wilderness area, we must keep in mind that we are entering the habitat of hundreds of species. It is our duty to ensure that their conditions are not affected by our presence. This is why on #WorldEnvironmentalEducationDay, we remind you of the key practices to be followed when entering the Torres del Paine National Park: - Travel on authorized trails, as staying within the designated paths avoids erosion and encroachment on other natural spaces. - Never make bonfires, since the slightest fire can cause devastating fires. - Do not feed the animals in the park. Each representative of the Patagonian fauna has adapted to its environment and knows how to get its food. By following these guidelines, we can continue to take care of the various  wild areas in our territory and be  responsible tourists. We attended the GreenLatinos Summit last week in El Yunque National Forest--home to the Taíno native people of Puerto Rico and the only tropical rainforest that is part of the national forest system. The Summit was an opportunity for Latino/a/x (Latine) leaders from across the country to come together and share more about the work we are doing, learn new strategies, discuss opportunities for collaboration, and form lasting alliances. Latine communities are the second largest racial or ethnic group in the United States, after non-Hispanic whites. It is imperative for conservation groups to develop strategies that engage Latine communities in advocacy, organizing, and access efforts in order to build a stronger conservation movement. A few takeaways from the conference: *87% of Latine voters support a national goal of protecting 30% of America’s land and water by 2030. *92% of Latine voters support the protection of national parks and public lands. *Communities of color are three times more likely to live without access to natural areas compared to white communities in the U.S. For example 9/10 Latinos in the area surrounding Castner Range National Monument are nature deprived. *Decision making for public lands management happens through public processes that are primarily delivered in English, yet about 30% of Latines speak exclusively in English, and 71.1% speak a language other than English at home.
