For all the people working (or that worked) in retail before: Your experience matters Many people dismiss the value of retail jobs and the transferable skills that can be obtained through these experiences I’ve worked with several people who worked in retail prior to our current job, and the amount of work ethic and respect they hold is admirable Thanks to those heroes working in retail most of us could do our Christmas shopping every year. Some of these people are the most hardworking individuals you’ll ever meet So let me repeat it again: Retail jobs matter. The experience counts. If you work (or worked) in retail - don’t be afraid to showcase those transferable skills on your resume. Be proud of it. They matter. And for the rest of us: Next time you go shopping, let’s be kind to your retail person. And if they come to you because they want opportunities outside of retail… Let’s not dismiss the value they bring to the table. #StephSynergy Max Up

Not only does your experience matter, there are also numerous, high-paying corporate opportunities within retail. Do not overlook the larger retail corporations even if your degree is in the Computer Science or I.T. field. Retail is not a dead-end path.

In my Retail days, I interviewed a guy for a team leader role, and he absolutely smashed it. But it wasn’t because he nailed every interview question. Instead, he did something very few are prepared to do. He got out of his comfort zone and did something different to the crowd. When this guy turned up to his interview. He pulled a ring binder out from his bag (yes - this was a few years ago now). And inside that binder? A complete detailed analysis of my store. He’d walked the store in the eyes of a customer and a manager. And identified my store's strengths, weaknesses and opportunities. I was blown away obviously. But did he possess an unfair advantage? Did he have access to something you lack? Not at all. He simply went the extra mile. By doing so, he demonstrated to me that even though he didn't come from a retail background, he possessed the skills and experience necessary to make a valuable contribution to my store and its operations. And he’d done so in his own words. Most people in the job market come across as unremarkable, blending in with the crowd by following the same rules. All it takes is someone to rise above them and do something slightly different. And It only takes the one resource that everyone has to offer. Time and effort. It’s time to be different. From a seasonal hire to a Store Manager 🏢 In 2021, I embarked on a journey that I'll cherish forever – coming to Canada as an immigrant, armed with dreams💭 and determination💪 My first job was as a seasonal associate at Dollar Tree during the holidays. Little did I know that this was the first step towards an incredible transformation. ✨ Fast forward two years, and here I stand as the Store Manager at Showcase - Home of the Hottest Trends. The path was challenging, but oh, the rewards have been worth it! 🌟 Here are four learnings from my journey that I'd like to share with you: 1️⃣ Resilience is Key: In the face of adversity, I learned to adapt and bounce back stronger. Stay committed to your goals, no matter how tough the road may seem. 2️⃣ Embrace Opportunity: That seasonal job at Dollar Tree was my chance to prove myself. Always seize opportunities, even if they start small, for they can lead to something remarkable. 3️⃣ Continuous Learning: I absorbed knowledge like a sponge. Many of us have worked retail jobs early in our careers. While these roles may seem menial, they provide invaluable skills that are transferable to professional settings. I was reminded of this when reading a recent article about how retail experience helps job seekers stand out. The article profiles two professionals who leveraged their retail backgrounds to build empathy, communication skills, and attention to detail. As someone who worked retail for years, this resonated with me deeply. I still remember the frustration when corporate would create displays without consulting store employees. Despite our intimate knowledge of store layouts, leadership assumed they knew better. This top-down approach often led to wasted time and money when displays didn't fit on shelves. Now that I'm involved in our most innovative projects, I always make it a priority to gather candid feedback from the field. Real-world insights are vital for creating solutions that work. Without that retail experience, I may not have learned this lesson. The article is a great reminder that retail builds patience, problem-solving, and a service mindset valuable in any role.
