This triumph brought the coveted trophy back to India after an 18-year wait. There were many lessons from the game, in collaboration with my colleague Shivani Gupta we have picked ten below: ๐๐ฌ๐ญ๐๐๐ฅ๐ข๐ฌ๐ก ๐ ๐ฐ๐ข๐ง๐ง๐ข๐ง๐ ๐ฆ๐ข๐ง๐๐ฌ๐๐ญ ๐๐ซ๐จ๐ฆ ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐จ๐ฎ๐ญ๐ฌ๐๐ญ - Make it clear to everyone that you are here to win. ๐๐ฆ๐๐ซ๐๐๐ ๐๐จ๐ฅ๐ ๐๐๐๐ข๐ฌ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐ฆ๐๐ค๐ข๐ง๐ - elect to bat first. ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐ซ๐จ๐ฆ ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐๐ซ๐จ๐ง๐ญ - The entire series Rohit Sharma opened the batting for India, setting the pace and challenging the bowlers from the very first ball. ๐๐ง๐ฏ๐๐ฌ๐ญ ๐ข๐ง ๐๐ฑ๐ฉ๐๐ซ๐ข๐๐ง๐๐ ๐๐ง๐ ๐๐๐๐ค ๐ฒ๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ ๐ค๐๐ฒ ๐ฉ๐ฅ๐๐ฒ๐๐ซ๐ฌ - Kohli had been out of form the entire series, but to yet give him a chance to open, shows the belief in backing teammates going through a touch patch. King Kohli silenced his critics with a match winning innings. ๐๐๐ฅ๐ฎ๐ ๐๐จ๐ง๐ฌ๐ข๐ฌ๐ญ๐๐ง๐๐ฒ - Masterclass Bumrah always delivers with his accuracy, variable pace, and tact. He is the man who makes all the difference with the ball and the team can always count on him. ๐๐จ๐ง๐ญ๐ซ๐ข๐๐ฎ๐ญ๐ ๐ข๐ง ๐๐ง๐ฒ ๐ฐ๐๐ฒ - Even though Surya Kumar didnโt click with the bat, he took an unimaginable catch to dismiss David Miller on the first ball of the last over putting India in the driverโs seat. ๐๐ญ๐๐ฒ ๐๐๐ฅ๐ฆ ๐๐ง๐ ๐๐จ๐๐ฎ๐ฌ๐๐ ๐ฎ๐ง๐๐๐ซ ๐ฉ๐ซ๐๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ - 22 runs from 18 balls and it was a tough decision for Rohit to bring in Bumrah in the 18th over. Bumrah delivered by taking an important wicket and giving away only 2 runs to bring the asking rate to 20 from 12 balls. ๐๐จ๐ฆ๐๐ข๐ง๐ ๐๐ฑ๐ฉ๐๐ซ๐ข๐๐ง๐๐ ๐๐ง๐ ๐ฒ๐จ๐ฎ๐ญ๐ก - The team's blend of experienced players and young talent proved to be a winning combination. ๐ ๐จ๐ฌ๐ญ๐๐ซ ๐ญ๐๐๐ฆ๐ฐ๐จ๐ซ๐ค ๐๐ง๐ ๐๐จ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐๐๐จ๐ซ๐๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง - The win was a collective effort, with contributions from every player and there will be many unsung heroes. Axar played his best, supported by Kuldeep, Shivam and Arshdeep. And finally, who can forget Hardik Pandya for bowling the final over under pressure and delivering. ๐๐๐ฅ๐๐๐ซ๐๐ญ๐ ๐๐จ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐๐๐ญ๐ข๐ฏ๐ ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐๐๐๐ฌ๐ฌ - The team's exuberant celebrations after their victory underscored the significance of appreciating the collective effort, including contributions of their family members. Rohit Sharma's victory lap with his daughter and Bumrah's heartwarming interactions with his family were particularly touching moments. Above all, it's important to acknowledge the pivotal role of coach Rahul Dravid, who served as a pillar of strength for the Indian team through their highs and lows. Here is to the Indian team for winning more championships! What was your special moment or learning?
My #11: Satyamev Jayate. If you are good, you will eventually win! Donโt give up. India have been unlucky to not win past few World Cup tournaments although they dominated the tournament throughout except one match. And now this time, we were lucky to win from the point when we had almost lost ( Klaasen cameo). So if you continue to be good over longer period of time , nothing will stop you from getting what you deserve. Lucky will even out.
Well captured! It came down to one game, but when a team rises to the top of its sport - the success is never overnight. Lots of great lessons that also apply to building companies.
Dont know if this is the right example --- ๐๐ฆ๐๐ซ๐๐๐ ๐๐จ๐ฅ๐ ๐๐๐๐ข๐ฌ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐ฆ๐๐ค๐ข๐ง๐ - elect to bat first --- this is more a statistic driven decision, no? Doesn't India suck at chasing runs, always. They generally elect to bat first - No? To be clear, I am not a fan of the sport nor do I track ticket but that's my impression just from listening to peers.
Navin Chaddha This summary highlights the positive aspects and successful strategies employed by India. However, significant learning often arises from our greatest defeats. For South Africa, losing the World Cup final to India likely provided many valuable lessons. A crucial takeaway from this experience is the principle: "It's not done until it's done." South Africa seemed to have the match in hand, needing only 26 runs from 24 balls with 6 wickets remaining, yet they still fell short. This pattern was evident in several matches throughout the World Cup, where teams faltered under pressure and failed to secure victory despite favorable positions. I firmly believe that... It is NOT done until it's done!
(i) Playing with the strengths of the team and trusting them to perform despite "what others say" . Whether it was Kohli not performing , or off field Pandya / Rohit media spatter over Mumbai Indian captaincy, Kuldeep giving more runs, their strengths were not doubted in this mach or ICC 2023. (ii) Players are human. Stick with them in their lows without impacting the lineup of Top 15 (personal situation with Siraj this time and Pant before)
Well said Navin. Truly a hard fought match clinched by India by the skin of their teeth (fateful catch/six could have changed the outcome). More importantly everyone doing their part is really what worked to edge out a very strong SA response. Well played both teams and well deserved win, team India.
Champion India won the day with focus, positive spirit & resilience with mix of talent. Thanks to South Africa for a spellbinding match.
Adding a #11. Setting the strategy - Rohit Sharma made it very clear that in this format of the game (T20) there is no time for individual records. Everyone needs to be a role player and not chase records like a 50/100 or 3 wickets and slow down or bowl differently
