We are World Champions in T20 Cricket !! Yes, Team India, 🇮🇳 The Men in Blue are World Champions again, the first in T20 remaining undefeated throughout the tournament - packing off arch-rivals Pakistan in the Group Stage, seeing off the mighty Australians in Super8, crushing the English in semi-final, and then defeating South Africa in the finals, snatching victory from the jaws of defeat!! And while we continue to celebrate this victory, let’s look at few data-points of this brilliant success : 1. Consistency - In a game of uncertainity, and upsets galore in the tournament - like USA beating Pakistan or Nepal almost defeating South Africa, India remained undefeated winning all the matches that it could play. 2. Strategy, and sticking to it - India started with 3 pacer - 2 spinner approach in the initial matches played in US, but later shifted to 3 spinner once in the slower tracks. 3. Believe in Team Members - While young Shivam Dube had some ups & downs, but the team management believed in him & didnt go for frequent changes in the playing 11, even when they had the likes of Jaiswal & Sanju Samson as replacements 4. Trust your Man Friday - in the 7 matches leading to the final, his aggregate was 75… yet in the final, when India was down at 34/3, the King guarded one end, build partnerships with Dube & Axar, accelarated after the 14th over, and took India to decent 176, no wonder King Kohli was Player of The Match in the finals for his brilliant 76 5. Using multiple-talented - Axar Patel is flexible at almost any position in the middle order and astute captain Rohit Sharma used this to perfection. When few early wickets were lost, or when left-right combo was needed, or just when you wanted to save the 360deg Surya to a later stage, Axar played perfectly to the team’s need. His brilliant 47 in the final was phenomenal. 6. Practice makes you perfect - The World Cup, right on the back of the IPL - albeit on slightly different pitches of USA&West India :) No wonder, some say BCCI is real winner 👍 7. Perfect Team Composition, and sticking to it : With 6 specialist batters, 3 all-rounders in Hardik, Axar & Jadega, the two pacers, and the chinaman spinner - the team stuck to the same playing 11 all through the tournament. With an all-win streak, it didnt need to unnecesarily rock the boat. 8. Boom-boom Bumrah - In a T20 tournament his overall economy was just over 4 - can you believe it? And along with 15 wickets, no wonder he was the player of the tournament. And his pace-partner Arshdeep Singh brilliantly complimented being the highest wicket taker with 17 scalps 9. Consistent batting unit - with top 5 batters roHIT, Surya, Kohli, Pant and Hardik - all in top-20 in aggregate, the unit delivered consistently In a team-game, when everyone plays their part, when each back-up other team mate, success is guaranteed and that’s precisely what Team India did. 1983, 2007, 2011 and now 2024 … we keep being at the Top of The World 👍

Team India has entered the finals of the Cricket World Cup 2023. 15 players (and 16 if you include Hardik Pandya who had to leave midway after an injury). Plus the coaching and support staff led by Rahul Dravid. Where everyone's contribution matters, including the supremely talented Ravichandran Ashwin who has played just one match in the tournament. Including Ishan Kishan. Including Shardul Thakur. Including Prasidh Krishna. What makes the 10/10 performance so far commendable is that it is not just one or two players who are performing. Every player at different junctures has stood up and performed for the country. This World Cup is not just about one Virat Kohli, as Star Sports would have us believe with its breathless, fawning coverage of the King. This is not to say I am a Kohli baiter. On the contrary, I am a huge fan of his `Virat' talent, work ethic, attitude and zeal for what he does. 50 ODI centuries is no mean feat. But do not belittle a Shreyas, a Rohit, a Shami, a Kuldeep, a Jadeja and the others by reducing them to supporting cast. Think of the bite Shami has brought to India's bowling attack. 397 would have been a pointless statistic if there was no Shami at the Wankhede yesterday. Or Rahul and Jadeja with those cool catches. Or Iyer to take charge of the middle period, accelerating at will. Little is spoken about Rohit's leadership or Rahul Dravid's mentoring behind the scenes. I think both have been brilliant during the campaign. If Rahul is the Wall, Rohit has been the cool graffiti on the wall, with his explosive batting at the top, clever bowling changes and of course, witty one-liners at press conferences. We Indians love hero worship. We love to deify. We love to compare. We love to pull down someone to elevate someone else. All this is antithetical to the idea of a team sport. The important takeaway is someone who can bat a bit at number 8. In the 2023 World Cup, Mohammad Shami wasn't in the playing eleven in the initial games. This meant all the heavy hitting had to be done by the top order. He argues that batters at the top play more freely when they know that a number seven or eight can bat a little. In the World Cup final, KL Rahul and Virat Kohli played extremely defensively to counter the loss of early wickets. While Shami's bowling was unparalleled throughout the tournament, it came at the cost of a Shardul Thakur who could bat a little. Kimber acknowledges that many other things went against India and in favor of Australia. Batting became easier in the second innings. Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc hit their stride, and Travis Head connected with everything he touched. Yet, the reason why Kohli and Rahul played defensively can't be countered.
