One realization that has become apparent is that: Despite possessing exceptional problem-solving skills, engineers sometimes lack the foresight to understand the underlying business dynamics. While possessing great knowledge of the business, business developers may sometimes lack the technical understanding necessary for precise decision-making. Some may argue, 'This is why we need a team. Every role has its own strengths and weaknesses'. However, to me, this only partially encapsulates the essence of the responsibilities at play. The core lies in the mindset. When each team member forges a robust connection between the 'How' and the 'Why,' a synergy is born, paving the way for aligned goals and minimizing conflicts. This underscores the paramount importance of sharing insights across departments, bridging the gap between the 'How' and the 'Why'. Without understanding 'How', it may be difficult to come up with creative engineering solutions and set practical project timelines. Without understanding 'Why', it's hard to feel like you're making a significant impact because you're not fully aware of the true essence of the impact. As software consultants, 7Factor has years of experience building teams and finding people to fit our client's teams, but how do we know that they will be successful? Our Engineering Managers (EMs) work closely with our Customer Success Managers to handcraft all of our teams, so we asked them to share how they build successful teams time and time again. These are the qualities they look for in their team members: 😎 Confident and self-aware. Their team must be confident enough to ask questions when confused or uninformed, and self-aware enough to know when to ask questions. 🤔 Opinionated yet inquisitive. Opinionated people will offer their suggestions right away. If they have a team where no one has an opinion, progress will be slow. Likewise, the team must be inquisitive enough to understand each other's ideas and brainstorm effectively. Inquisitive people will also want to know what their teammates are working on or thinking which helps keep the team well informed and connected. 🤗 Emotionally intelligent. Although most of our work requires IQ, your team's EQ is also important. They must explain why they did something, why it was the best solution, and how it helps the client. Having team members who are socially aware and emotionally intelligent will make this process much smoother, especially when facing pushback. 👥 When building a team the goal is to find people who work well together and give them what they need to grow. No team is going to be amazing off the line. Your ability as a leader to foster their growth is just as important as the individual team members. Ever felt like your team of '10x' engineers isn't living up to their full potential? I have. Back in the day, despite having a team of brilliant minds, we couldn't replicate the exceptional performance I knew they were capable of. Post after post, project after project, the results were consistently...Meh! Then something clicked. What if the issue wasn't with the individuals but how we combined their strengths? I began to see the value not just in the brilliance of my ‘10x’ stars, but also in the diligent, meticulous work of others. I realized that creating high-performing teams isn't about stacking up superstars, but rather about leveraging individual strengths in a complementary, synergistic way. The lesson? We need both the Ahns and the Samirs. The innovators who blaze through tasks, and the careful craftspeople who deliver elegant, complete code.
