Who needs such a change! The Accreditation Committee on Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) in the USA is considering significant changes to the pediatric residency training. The proposed changes include: · Reduction in the minimum time allotted to critical care (PICU and NICU) · Removal of procedural requirements (e.g., intubation) · Elimination of neonatologists from pediatric residency core faculty These changes, if approved, will certainly impact the readiness of pediatric residency graduates for neonatology fellowship training, and the delivery of newborn care in non-NICU setting. Congratulations to David Emmons, APRN, FNP, who was nominated by a student for our Preceptor Spotlight!! David graduated with an ADN in 2002 and took a rather circuitous route to a BSN in 2011 and graduated with a MSN-FNP in 2016. He says, "When people would ask 'what I worked in', my answer was 'Everything but pediatrics and OB'." For the last 5 years, he has worked as a Walk-in provider doing primarily urgent care at Elbowoods Memorial Health Center for the Three Affiliated Tribes. While most of his work is Urgent Care, he continues to provide a broad variety of care. Preceptors are vital to the success of our students, and we genuinely appreciate and value them in preparing our students for advanced practice. In the nomination, our student wrote: 📢 "David is a great preceptor because he is knowledgeable, understanding, calm, patient, and kind. He provides pearls of wisdom and shares any resources he has found helpful in his practice. He breaks down the pathophysiology of complex diseases that we are seeing in the clinic and explains why he asks certain questions in the interview and why he uses certain medications in the treatment plan. He allows time for me to ask questions and has made my preceptor environment a safe and enjoyable place to learn. He takes time with each of his patients and provides resources and education so they can understand and ask questions." We asked David a few questions about being a preceptor. ✨ What advice do you have for students in terms of making the most of their clinical placements? Ask questions! You may be worried about being a burden on the time of your preceptor, but most people are capable of walking and talking at the same time. I do just as much education between my office and the patient room as I do in the patient room. ✨ What advice do you have for those that would like to become preceptors, in terms of preparing for this role? I think the biggest 'fear' potential preceptors have is 'I don't have enough time' or 'the student will slow me down'. Being a preceptor has rarely taken time away from the care I provide for my patients or my workload. In the early stages, when the student is still in the 'Observational' stage; they are following you and listening and watching... While you are doing things *talk*. Talk about what you are seeing or not seeing, talk about why you are ordering a particular test and what you will do with the information gained from it (because you are thinking about it already), talk about why you are choosing a particular medication over another one. How can pediatric medicine professors stay organized and efficient? ✏️ Pediatrics professors with an interest in medical education can stay organized and efficient by utilizing various tools and strategies. Here are some suggestions: 1. Use a digital calendar or planner to keep track of teaching schedules, meetings, and deadlines. 2. Create a system for organizing teaching materials, such as lecture notes, presentations, and handouts, using digital folders or a cloud-based storage solution. 3. Utilize project management tools to collaborate with colleagues, track progress on educational initiatives, and manage tasks effectively. 4. Set specific goals and priorities for teaching and educational research, and regularly review and update them to stay focused and on track. 5. Develop a routine for reviewing and updating curriculum materials, staying current with medical education literature, and integrating new teaching methods and technologies. 6. Consider using educational software and platforms to streamline administrative tasks, such as grading, attendance tracking, and communication with students. 7. Collaborate with colleagues and educational support staff to share resources, best practices, and workload, and to stay informed about new developments in medical education. By implementing these strategies, pediatrics professors can enhance their organization and efficiency in medical education while also improving the quality of their teaching and research.

China's National Health Commission and 9 other departments jointly issued the "Opinions on Promoting the High-quality Development of Children's Medical and Health Services", proposing to build a high-level children's medical service network, and improve the high-level children's medical service network led by the National Children's Medical Center and the Regional Children's Medical Centers, with provincial, municipal and county-level children's hospitals, general hospital pediatrics, traditional Chinese medicine hospital pediatrics, and maternal and child health institutions as the main body. Pediatric outpatient clinics should be generally opened in second-level public Chinese medicine hospitals, and pediatric wards should be opened in third-level public Chinese medicine hospitals. By 2025, the allocation of pediatric medical resources and the balance of services will gradually increase, and the number of pediatric practicing (assistant) physicians per 1,000 children will reach 0.87 and the number of beds will reach 2.50.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many pediatric training programs around the U.S. pivoted to online learning for health and safety reasons, and offered medical trainees fewer in-hospital clinical opportunities. In a study, a researcher from Johns Hopkins Children’s Center, along with a group of pediatric emergency medicine program directors, compared pediatric subspecialty exam scores and certification exam passing rates before and during the pandemic. Findings from the study, published in Academic Pediatrics, show the pandemic had varying effects on the scores and certification passing rates of pediatric subspecialty fellows nationwide. https://bit.ly/44TGn0Z
