🌍 Celebrating the Impact of the World Federation of Neurology (WFN) 🌍 I'm beyond grateful for the opportunity to be part of the World Federation of Neurology (WFN). This organization has profoundly influenced our professional journey and personal growth. Check out the WFN YouTube channel to explore some of our interviews and insights. WFN embodies opportunity, inclusivity, and diversity, consistently promoting quality neurology and brain health for all. My journey with WFN began in 2005 when, as a young fellow, I raised a question from the back row at a conference. That moment led to my inclusion in the Education Committee for the Asia Oceania region. Since then, WFN has provided me with a platform to serve the world, advancing my academic career from a single paper in 2005 to 350 publications and a citation index of 115,000, all as a non-university employee. I am currently supervising 10 PhD students from four different countries and four different universities, all of whom will become great leaders. WFN's commitment to quality neurology and better brain health is unwavering. We champion these values daily, fostering a community with zero prejudice and a dedication to action. Our upcoming World Congress is a testament to this commitment, bringing together colleagues from over 150 nations to promote brain health. Brain disorders affect one in two people globally. This statistic underscores the urgency of our mission. Our upcoming Stroke GBD paper will reveal new risk factors, highlighting the imminent threat to our existence. We must prioritize preventative brain health today—there's no health without brain health. Let's unite to preserve humanity and promote brain health at the grassroots level. Intriguing news in the field of Alzheimer's research: a small study just published in the NEJM shows that focused ultrasound-based (FUS) blood-brain barrier (BBB) opening can greatly enhance the effectiveness of aducanumab in lowering amyloid levels in targeted brain regions. In the study, three patients were treated with aducanumab for 6 months while simultaneously undergoing FUS. The results were quite spectacular, compared to intravenously administered aducanumab alone or other anti-amyloid antibodies. While there are still many things to sort out before this could potentially be used in clinical practice, FUS is an interesting technology to get sufficient drug exposure in the brain. Check out the study here: https://lnkd.in/eZ3kS-kS. Thanks to Peng Leong for bringing this to our attention. #Alzheimers #technology #science #neuroscience #healthcare

Congratulations to Barrow #neurosurgeon Andrew Yang, MD, MS, on receiving a K12 grant from the Neurosurgeon Research Career Development Program (NRCDP) of the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) at the The National Institutes of Health (NIH). The two-year grant will provide Dr. Yang, principal investigator of the Human #Neurophysiology and Neuromodulation (HNN) Lab, with a total of $330,000 for the research study: "Thalamocortical network of ictogenesis and its #neuromodulation." The study aims to improve our understanding of the mechanisms of #deepbrainstimulation (#DBS) in drug-resistant #epilepsy. The HNN Lab will use advanced computational techniques, such as machine learning, to analyze stereoEEG data obtained in the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit. They will explore pathologic changes in the interactions between the thalamus (where DBS is delivered) and cortical regions from which #seizures arise during the minutes preceding seizures. Dr. Yang hopes to identify specific changes in thalamocortical interactions that are associated with an increased risk of #seizure generation, and to understand how thalamic stimulation may reverse such pro-seizure interactions.
