An inside tip for applying for a job with many government agencies, including my own at County of Orange. Recruiting for an organization that is 18,000 employees strong like the County is a tough task and our HR Department does a great job at it. Yet putting together a job description, getting it posted and summarily doing the recruitment takes a good bit of time and energy for both HR and the department that’s in need of a great colleague. As such, many departments can come together - either before or after the recruitment - and want to utilize the “list” that was created for it. A list are folks who have interviewed and get rated according to qualifications and can summarily be called up to interview for another position. Example of how it worked for me. I applied for one position in the County and didn’t get the job but I made it to the “A list.” I had two other departments at the County who contacted me shortly after and wanted to interview me for a similar position. I interviewed with one and summarily got the job. So this means that while you might be applying for a job for one position, there might be another hidden opportunity and position open in another department that is available as well. My advice? Apply for positions at the County and work your way on to several lists if possible. Best of luck and I’m here for questions. Oh, and apply to join my team as our Creative Manager. My lists for other positions have gotten used in the past and I wouldn’t be surprised if this one would get used as well.

Following industry consultation, Locate Isle of Man have planned an 8 week marketing campaign, which will commence towards the end of January. The purpose of the campaign is to raise awareness of the variety of roles available including Senior Administrators, Compliance and more. The ultimate objective is to fill 60 roles in the finance sector by December 2024. At long last, I'm finally ready to start recruiting participants for my research into the role of DPO! Completely appreciate how busy you all are although if you have time to participate in any capacity, I would be very grateful. I am seeking to engage participants in a PhD research study that are currently in the role of Data Protection Officer (DPO) within an organisation complying with UK data protection laws. I have developed a short survey which is followed by the opportunity to register to take part in the research more actively. The aim of this research is to develop an understanding of Data Protection Officers’ (DPOs) contributions to data protection practices and compliance within their organisational contexts, and identify professional and personal competencies required for a DPO to be effective in their role. No one will be personally judged. All participation will be anonymized in any outputs. The benefits of taking part will depend upon you and what you want to get out of the research and it is recognized that the research coincides with a potentially uncertain time for Data Protection Officers due to the passage of new data protection legislation in the UK. However, for those that participate beyond the initial survey, there will be: - Opportunities to reflect not only on the way in which you approach your role but also how practices help your organisation with compliance - Support with identifying areas of strength as well as areas that may benefit from development - A process of reflection and learning for participants - The development of a map of practices within your organisation that you will be able to access The research will be used to deliver a PhD at UCL and key findings will be published. I hope that this work will contribute to a better understanding of the role and value of the DPO and data protection delivery more generally. I offered FREE CISO hiring advice backed by data. Here's the response I got. Me: Sees client advertising a CISO role, sends email to client advising that £120k is below market value. Sent my guidebook and explained what I do. Client: *no reply* Me: Sees the role advertised again 4 weeks later. Send's follow up email offering FREE advice, along with market data & metrics to show tangible evidence. Client: "We are not interested in your help. That's the budget we have. We will find someone who wants the job title" Me: Sees job advertised again 3 months later... If I was told that I was doing something wrong, it was backed up with evidence and I was offered free advice... I'd be sure to listen. What more can we do? 👇 comment below.
