Following our post on the Top 10 geothermal countries, there clearly is a difference if one looks at power generation capacity and direct use, but another look can also be the share of energy generated as part of overall energy supply … here an example (while now about 3 years old) of the top 10 countries based on the share of geothermal in electricity generation

#IRP 2023, the country's electricity plan is finally out for public comment. At a glance, the RE allocation in general and solar pv in particular is on the low side, South African Photovoltaic Industry Association (SAPVIA) monitors the pipeline of RE projects quite closely. Besides NERSA registrations ( at above 6 GW already, granted most of those projects are yet to reach financial close), the annual #SAREGS survey that we conduct with South African Wind Energy Association (SAWEA) and Eskom Holdings SOC Ltd predicts a lot higher appetite for private sector RE. We will study this thoroughly before we make definitive remarks. Looking forward to engaging with government towards a plan that will concurrently address multiple socio-economic imperatives e.g., #industrialisation agenda outlined i #SAREM would benefit from more ambitious RE targets, not to mention achievement of our #NDCs #irp #irp2023 #electricityplanning ##energysecurity #wind #solar #solarpv
INDUSTRY NEWS: The much anticipated Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) 2023, the country's #electricity plan up to 2030 has been released by Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) for public comment. South African Photovoltaic Industry Association (SAPVIA) will study the plan and provide comprehensive comments in consultation with its members and strategic partners. #energy #renewableenergy #solar #distributedgeneration #solar #solarpv

The power demand in the country has gone up by 50.8% in energy terms from 2013-14 to 2022-23. The peak demand has gone up from 135,918 MW in 2013-14 to 243,271 MW in September 2023. We have been able to meet the increase in demand because we added 196,558 MW of capacity, including 104,059 MW of renewable energy capacity, between 2014 to 2023. #powersector #powergeneration #peakdemand #renewableenergy

The much anticipated Integrated Resource Plan has been released, with some sobering findings: “Analysis of the grid period between now and year 2030 highlights a concerning electricity supply and demand deficit. While ongoing additional generation capacity initiatives are expected to alleviate unserved energy, they do not fully address the underlying system adequacy. “The final policy decision must be taken on the basis of long term decarboniation trajectory while improving South Africa's competitiveness, growing the economy through an industrial renaissance." "Locally, the rollout of renewable energy is set to increase rapidly through public and private procurement programmes as the country aims to achieve energy security while decarbonising the electricity supply." #IRP2023 #southafrica #electricitysupply #sustainability #NDC #renewableenergy

Natural gas facilities in ERCOT are being overworked more than ever to accommodate intermittent renewable generation as Texas heads into some troubling days ahead. The previous maximum one-hour ramp (7,760 MW) for NG plants in ERCOT has already been surpassed 4 times this winter. The latest max, occurring on January 12 and reaching 9,918 MW, eclipsed the previous benchmark by 28 percent. In every case, these ramps occurred when wind and solar generation dropped for a combined 10-12 GW in one hour - representing between 22 and 24 percent of demand at the time. Based on EIA data.

“Construction of Phase 1 at the Rio Grande LNG Facility continues to progress according to plan, as we work alongside Bechtel to construct Trains 1 through 3 and their supporting infrastructure safely, efficiently, on schedule, and within budget,” said Matt Schatzman, NextDecade’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. “The Rio Grande LNG Facility has truly begun to take shape recently, as concrete foundation pours for Train 1 are ongoing, key materials such as piping and structural steel have been delivered to the site, and shoreline work and levee construction are underway. Proactive project and risk management remain key priorities as construction of Phase 1 continues to progress.” “We are currently at a unique point in the Company’s history as we develop and expect to FID highly attractive expansion capacity this year and next year, while safely constructing Phase 1 capacity, and preparing our organization to achieve our long-term objective of becoming a leading LNG owner and operator. We are confident that delivering on our plans will create long-term value for our stakeholders.” “We are focused on achieving a positive FID on Train 4 in the second half of this year. We expect TotalEnergies to exercise its option to purchase 1.5 million tonnes per annum of LNG from Train 4, and commercial discussions are progressing well with numerous additional counterparties for the remainder of the LNG necessary to support a positive FID on Train 4 this year. Additionally, we are continuing to work with Bechtel on the EPC contracting process, which we expect will enable us to finalize the EPC contract for Train 4 by the end of the second quarter of 2024. We are determined to capitalize on the robust market opportunity to unlock the value of our fully permitted, brownfield expansion capacity, and we are strongly committed to do so in a way that maximizes value to our shareholders.”

Today in Athens, Greece I participated on the ministerial meeting of the member states of the Central and South-Eastern European Energy Connectivity (CESEC) which was discussed the achievements of the region since the last ministerial meeting in 2021. Discussions focused on future work regarding the region's priorities in energy infrastructure and energy market integration, resulting in a set of meeting conclusions, an updated action plan for electricity and renewable energy sources and an updated action plan for gas.

The newly published Intergrated Resource Plan(IRP) 2023 makes for quite an interesting read.
