Jensen Young - Mechanical Engineering '25 Hometown: Greenville, South Carolina "I have an interest in materials science, and mechanical engineering has a special focus on the properties of individual materials. In mechanical engineering, you explore how dynamic motion affects specific species of metals and study physics on a macro scale. Virtually every course I've taken has been a specialized physics class, and I understand so much more about how the physical world works than I ever thought I would. Since mechanical engineering is grounded in large-scale physical reactions, the algebra and calculus within it are all applied in way that makes sense - there's no imaginary numbers to worry about." Welcome to our Summer Engineering Intern Amelia McKenna! 1. What’s your educational background? I went to high school at Northwest Catholic in West Hartford, CT and I just finished my junior year at WPI. 2. What do you do for Riley Power and what does it entail? So far, my job is to learn as much as I can from the people around me. I’ve been learning the basics of how boilers work and doing a few tasks like heat maps to gain a better understanding of the work that goes into making power happen here at Riley. 3. What work experience do you have that helped you get this role? I feel like my work at WPI has been the biggest component of me feeling like I can flourish here—the project-based curriculum has helped me to work effectively within a team and understand chemical engineering on a more hands on level. I also have had lab opportunities through the school to work under professors on developing new ways to generate energy. I also have worked many service industry jobs which has helped my communication skills in terms of explaining things clearly, having patience, and thinking on my feet. 4. What are 3 things you’d like to share about you? A few things about me are that I love rock climbing, collecting plants, and I’ve built my own PC!
