In the restaurant industry, leadership is everything. Restaurant owners who lead well have more opportunity to * be listened to * build a team that wants to help them * solve unexpected and challenging issues that come up However, restaurateurs who do not know how to lead will more often then not * encounter different challenges with their team members * feel unable to solve major issues * attempt a bunch of unsuccessful strategies In many occasions, those restaurant owners seem unable to recognize their deficient leadership skills. When working with those restaurateurs, it is important to have them see the discord they have created within their restaurant. I am more concerned about the restaurant industry now than during the pandemic. I continue to hear stories of people walking away from the industry feeling more burned out and pissed off than ever. I continue to have experiences in restaurants that are disengaging and witness servers and bartenders struggling with the amount of work that is asked of them. I am seeing these struggles in independent restaurants across the country. The missing piece is leadership. We need leaders who are working the floor, working shoulder to shoulder with the teams and recognizing things are going wrong and curious about how to make it right.
