When it comes to innovation, some of the best products in the world were born thanks to one person and their vision. Sometimes their vision is so far ahead of its time these individuals have to lead their development teams with an iron fist. While this sort of management style is frowned upon today, although it is not entirely absent, products made through passion, pettiness, ruthlessness and narcissism, among other personal traits, evoked the most emotions among their consumers. When I left my last company I explained to my team that Michelangelo would never have let the guy who gave him the paint take credit for the Sistine Chapel. Here Steve Jobs refers to Leonardo (a contemporary of Michelangelo of course, and more talented) and asks: “did Leonardo have a guy on the side to mix his paint? Of course not.” Steve’s point is that the doers are actually the thinkers. It is easy to take credit for an idea (“oh, I thought about this three years ago”) but when you dig a little deeper you discover that the doers were actually the thinkers. Leaving my last company was the best thing that ever happened to me, because all the “thinker-doers”, the intellectuals who know how to get things done, also have the courage to stick with me wherever I go. And a small team of “A” players will beat armies of “B” players! As of today we are already investing in 1,350 mobile site leases per annum (a record) and accelerating to 1,500 per annum within a few months. By year-end we expect to have more than 200 Investment and Development Managers (IDMs) in 16 countries investing in 2,000 mobile site leases year after year. This would make us by far the most prolific global site lease investor in history. In my experience, leading a sales team is similar to coaching a sports team. I believe in this equation: Activities + Skills = Results. For those of you who appreciate the clarity of mathematics, it's evident that the variables lie on the left side. So, during your next one-on-one, focus on the variables – the activities they engage in and the skills they develop. If building confidence is a goal for your reps, do you know the equation for achieving that result? What are the variables under your control?

*The Cautionary Tale of Icarus: A Reminder to Balance Ambition with Humility*As we strive for greatness in our careers and personal lives, let's remember the ancient story of Icarus.Icarus, with wings made of wax, flew too close to the sun, ignoring his father's warnings. His ambition and pride led to his downfall, as his wings melted and he plummeted into the sea.In our pursuit of success, let's not forget to stay grounded and humble. May we learn from Icarus' mistake and:- Set ambitious goals, but with a realistic approach- Listen to wise counsel and guidance- Stay focused on our core values and strengths- Embrace failure as a chance to learn and growLet's soar to great heights, but with the wisdom to avoid the pitfalls of unchecked ambition.#Icarus #Ambition #Humility #Success #Failure #Growth #Leadership #CareerAdvice #PersonalDevelopment
