Empathetic Tech Leader | Data Aficionado | Rainmaker | Fearless | Poet | Education Access Champion | Inclusion and Justice Specialist
This is a real, salient thing that’s happening. My story: I was lucky to get a spot that’s only *4 hours* per week for my nursery school aged child which is costing me an hour commute each way twice a week and an arm and a leg… 1. Our son will never get off the waitlist of any daycare within an hour radius, so this is our only option for early education which the data shows improves learning outcomes 2. My spouse will have forgone 3 years salary for this, by the time our son reaches local preschool age. …and while I’m so grateful to live in a state with universal pre-k starting at age “3 and potty trained…” 3. This dire cascading situation has hamstrung our ability to move freely about the professional cabin (me: so many opportunities turned down!) and tradesmen (him) 4. Potential irreparable damage to the delicate balance known as marriage/ partnership Keep in mind, what I’m describing is a “fortunate” situation with an understanding employer who gets these things are temporary and a helpful, albeit not super well-suited for the long term, stay at home partner even longer than we could’ve imagined. And the wild part: many to most employees with children are not “fortunate” in the way I have been. It’s going to be an interesting winter… I truly hope for an 11th hour miracle for those who are impacted by this funding loss!! If you are a supervisor, people manager or business owner with employees: Be gentle with folx who have children under 5 and/or those dependent on before/after school hours care. We are potentially even less ok than 3 years ago!

Would you believe that US Taxpayers have provided the child welfare system with enough funding and flexibility to age every young person out with a credit score above 700? Your public child welfare staff can accomplish this with every young adult who ages out of the system. This coupled with the universal, predictable, and synchronized (and alumni/foster youth-written) #FYI distribution mechanism for the #FUP Housing Choice Voucher program is the most expedient route for the US to begin to close the racial wealth gap. Furthermore, did you know that HCVs can be used for homeownership? #FSS Here we have a path to the middle class for youth in state custody... and a method by which they will raise their own children in peace without any scrutiny or attention from social services providers and the professional class. This is the way. This is the path to shrink the child welfare system. Do it by empowering youth and young families to ignore that the child welfare system even exists so that CPA is only needed to do the heroic work of rescuing and safely placing that 2% of children in child welfare who desperately need it. #expectmoreofyourtaxdollars #expectmoreofchildwelfare #movetowardslesssocialservices #economicsecurity #shrinktheprofessionalclass #selfsufficiency #housing #homeownership #fosteryouth #childwelfare #FYIworks
