We proudly presents the first images of the 70-meter Arctic Research Vessel (KEH ARV-70), meticulously designed for the Danish National Institute of Aquatic Resources (DTU Aqua). Over the past year, the Dansk Dana Konsortium (DDK)—a partnership between #KNUDEHANSEN (KEH) and OMT - Odense Maritime Technology (OMT)—has transformed the initial 68-meter concept into an extensive 70-m tender design. This evolution encompasses comprehensive engineering, propeller design, model testing (ice, maneuvering, seakeeping, cavitation, and self-propulsion tests), underwater noise analysis, and innovative measures to minimize bubble sweep down, culminating in a state-of-the-art Polar-class research vessel. DTU Aqua has now released a public tender for the detailed design and construction and delivery of the vessel, named ‘DANA V’. Courtesy of Visit Greenland, and background photo by Jason C. Hill. We're excited for tomorrow's kick-off at the SUT - Society for Underwater Technology conference on Innovative Geotechnologies for Energy Transition. We're proud to sponsor the McClelland Lecture, where Professor Richard Jardine of Imperial College London will share his expertise on time-dependent vertical bearing behaviour of shallow foundations and driven piles. Understanding vertical bearing behaviour is often key to foundation design. Assessing how this may change over time is crucial to project life-cycle analysis and allows designers to consider the potential benefits of pre-installing foundations or gradually building-up loads. Capturing the ageing processes is also key to assessing whether existing foundations can carry additional loads safely when modifying the superstructure or operating plant, addressing metocean or marine growth changes, assessing reliability levels or considering new loading cases, such as earthquakes. This lecture summarises recent developments in understanding the ageing of shallow foundations and driven piles. It reviews and reports experiments at clay, sand and chalk sites, supported by intensive characterisation, and emphasises the findings that are most important for practice and research. If you're attending, be sure to reach out to Dr Indrasenan Thusyanthan, Richard Pike and Trevon Joseph to find out more about the Geotechnical expertise within Gavin & Doherty Geosolutions (GDG). #OSIG2023 #geotechnicalengineering #energytransition #lecture

The share of complex offshore structures continues to increase. Nevertheless, there are comparatively few studies related to #scour at complex jacket structures or on the spatial evolution of scour. Insights into scour at complex offshore structures under clear-water and live-bed current conditions are now published in Ocean Engineering Elsevier https://lnkd.in/e2mpZ2bb Among other findings, the applied approach enables a dimensionless representation, revealing very similar normalised erosion depths under clear-water conditions for two complex structures with varying degrees of flow blockage. In addition, we analyse the pointwise scour development over time, highlight the spatio-temporal development and provide a comparison with jacket field data. Our research has been conducted in the context of the SFB1463: Offshore Megastrukturen funded by Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - German Research Foundation. Thanks go out to Alexander Schendel, Ramish Satari, Insa Neuweiler and Prof. Dr. Torsten Schlurmann.

In early November, the International Geosynthetics Society (IGS) marked four transformative decades in geotechnical engineering. The week-long event delved into IGS's history, mission, and the impact of geosynthetics, culminating with a presentation by Dr. JP Giroud, the first IGS president and a luminary in modern geotechnical engineering. The retrospective unveiled the evolution of the association and geosynthetics in general, which have earned credibility through rigorous quality control. Geosynthetics interact with the soil, they don't replace it. They offer benefits like easy transport, user-friendliness, and a reduced environmental footprint. They've proven instrumental in addressing challenges such as water conservation, pollution prevention, and landslide control. Additionally, they contribute to sustainable development by reducing energy use, minimizing transportation, and substituting natural materials like gravel and sand. Regarding the future and the crucial theme of sustainability, Professor Giroud concluded, "Engineering is done with numbers, not with common sense. Geosynthetic solutions must be quantified through scientifically proven methods.” Let's build a future world with geosynthetics.
