“Advanced machine intelligence does not suggest our extinction. It does mean, however, that human intelligence is not what human intelligence thought it was all this time.” —Benjamin H. Bratton #artificialintelligence #ai #intelligence #technology

https://lnkd.in/eGsVGsqD An extremely thought provoking article delving into the psychology of what scares humans so much about artificial intelligence. With an opening statement of "Grief-laden vitriol directed at AI fails to help us understand paths to better futures that are neither utopian nor dystopian, but open to radically weird possibilities.", you know the author is going to withhold no punches! My key takeaway... its not what AI can do that scares us, or fear that it will take our jobs, or replace human interactions even...it's that intelligence is no longer unique to the human condition. That an intelligence, above or on par with our own, can exist. The sooner we accept this, the sooner we adapt and thrive.

While Large Language Models present exciting possibilities across various industries, its immense potential can, paradoxically, cause overwhelming uncertainty and may inadvertently lead to analysis paralysis. The availability of numerous options and the shift in paradigm ( single-use-case possibility VS multiple-use-case possibilities ), can leave individuals struggling to identify the most effective path forward. Sadly, professionals might find themselves trapped in a state of indecision, unable to take concrete actions due to the fear of missing out on the best approach. I think there is no magic formulae to counteract this phenomenon, other than having a focused and strategic mindset within such a landscape and persistance in attempting to strike a balance between exploration and practicality so as to avoid information overload. #LLM #AI #AnalysisParalysis #NavigatingPossibilities #StrategicMindset

This is one of the most important papers on AI in years. Truly it covers the sweep of reactions to the Great Big AI Crisis with exceptional cogency, using an exceptional metaphoric device. https://lnkd.in/ggjBQzCc

I recently read this super interesting essay by Benjamin H. Bratton titled “The Five Stages of AI Grief.” Bratton explains how people react to AI using the stages of grief. Here’s a quick summary: • Denial: People think AI isn’t real or just hype. • Anger: Fear and anger about AI taking over jobs and privacy. • Bargaining: Trying to control AI with rules and policies. • Depression: Deep worry about AI’s impact on humanity. • Acceptance: Embracing AI as part of the future. My takeaway is that it’s becoming increasingly important to understand AI’s complex role in our world. Each of us should dedicate some time to think about balanced ways to integrate it positively into our lives and society. https://lnkd.in/diptuMFZ

AI is a hot topic and one I’m fascinated by. This article, "The Five Stages of AI Grief," compares current AI discussions to an emotional journey—denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. I’d recommend giving it a read, no matter which side of the #AI fence you’re on. #ArtificialIntelligence #TechTrends #AIEthics #AIImpact #GenerativeAI

Fantastic article by Benjamin Bratton, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED "What is today called “artificial intelligence” should be counted as a Copernican Trauma in the making. It reveals that intelligence, cognition, even mind (definitions of these historical terms are clearly up for debate) are not what they seem to be, not what they feel like, and not unique to the human condition. Obviously, the creative and technological sapience necessary to artificialize intelligence is a human accomplishment, but now, that sapience is remaking itself. Since the paleolithic cognitive revolution, human intelligence has artificialized many things — shelter, heat, food, energy, images, sounds, even life itself — but now, that intelligence itself is artificializable." #AI #AIadaption https://lnkd.in/gWpR5DY8

An interesting read for a noon coffee! ☕️ In a recent Noema article, Benjamin Bratton compares the societal reactions to AI advancements to Elizabeth Kübler-Ross's five stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. Bratton illustrates how these emotional stages reflect our struggle to understand and integrate AI into our lives, mirroring how we cope with profound changes and losses. Each stage represents a different approach to dealing with AI's impact, from outright denial of its significance to eventual acceptance of its transformative potential. 3wGrief is personal and individual. It is itself a medecine. We can only grow around grief.
