This E&E News story reviews the new U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) report, Pathways to Commercial Liftoff, Innovative Grid Deployment, examining how advanced grid technologies can boost overall electric grid capacity without building additional transmission lines. The story features input from Daniel Brooks, vice president of integrated grid and energy systems at EPRI, who explains that for these technologies to be effective, grid operators must have confidence that they operate as expected. Grid Enhancing Technologies (GETs) on both the transmission and distribution systems are a major research focus for EPRI, with white papers planned for release later this year. In graduate school I studied nanomagnetism, and the unit system I used the most was CGS (centimeter-gram-second) because it simplifies a lot of the equations having to do with magnetic fields. I am still tempted to use CGS sometimes, because even though 0.3 terawatts sounds big, 3 exa-ergs/sec sounds even bigger. And how often do you have an opportunity to use the exa prefix?
