On July 20th, 2023, I took part in JCI's first ever Summer Hackathon. I was lucky to be a part of an amazing team with Grace Schmitt, Diamonia Burns, Ryan Drew, and our MVP mentor, Laura Dinh. Together we worked to develop the winning solution to the daunting issue of efficiently and accurately granting access rights to employees within a company. Too often there will be employees, typically new hires or people switching departments, that don't have the proper access they need for their role. This leads to them submitting a ticket. This ticket takes time and energy to get worked on and approved, ultimately leading to inefficient use of resources for a company. Our team cleverly utilized Power Automate and its capabilities to develop a solution that pulled role specific access from active directory and created new, or cross referenced existing Personas based on an employees specific needs. We strongly believed that our solution provided not a perfect, but a more efficient and accurate automation to granting accesses to employees than what currently exists.
During all the presentations I was stunned at how many different solutions there were to the same problem. And all of them spectacular! The competition was thrilling and it was really close. There was an initial tie, but our team came out on top after the tiebreak! Not only was this a great learning experience as I had very little experience with Active Directory going in, but as it turns out, putting five people in a room and asking them to solve an unsolved problem for six hours really gets them bonding quickly. The memories of freezing in that room that only got colder (61.5 degrees F by the end of the day!), eating pizza with one hand, coding with the other, and laughing off the stresses of that day, (and finding a random brick?) will be memories that I will cherish for a really long time.
Thank you to Kerry Coleman for planning all of this! I think this was a great opportunity for everyone who partook and should definitely continue in future years.
