Mass-participation running events are open to everyone, but not always accessible to everyone. A One Poll survey* found a third of disabled people felt that sporting events were not set up to cater to them. Four in ten did not feel confident enough to take part. We are determined to change that! Check out our event pages on our website www.whitehead.foundation We are keen to hear from runners and prospective support runners in the Birmingham, Manchester and Bristol areas. Do you know someone with a disability or do you have a disability? It may be a neurodiverse, physical or learning disability, or a sensory impairment. If you or they want to run, we can match you with a Support Runner who will provide you with the support you need on the day, please register your interest here: https://lnkd.in/eMZSJjy2 If you are a runner and would like to enable a disabled person's ambition by supporting a runner through an event, please register your interest here: https://lnkd.in/ewqZ-69z *Reference One Poll survey

Few things are as fulfilling as enabling children to engage in outdoor play. It enhances cognitive growth, fosters social engagement, and grants them invaluable outdoor experiences, but as temperatures rise, how do you keep your playground and its visitors cool? On this first ever International Day of Play it's important for us to remember that play is not an optional extra...it is an essential part of healthy human development. Being told how to be resilient won't make our children resilient. But experiencing the need for it through play will. Being told how to be creative won't make our children creative. But experiencing the need for it through play will. Being told how to think critically won't make our children critical thinkers. But experiencing the need for it through play will. Being told how to navigate social interactions, or challenges, or decisions won't give our children social skills. But experiencing the need for it through play will. Being told about social justice and democratic processes won't make our children care about others. But experiencing the need for it through play will. Being told how important joy and happiness and fun is won't ensure their wellbeing...but experiencing it through play will. So please....just let the children play. #play #childhood #earlylearning #earlychildhood #birthtoeight

At ParkPlay, we are loving this quote from Rhiannon, our new PlayLeader at Castle Batch, when we asked what Play meant. What does Play mean to you? "Play, to me, is a universal language that knows no boundaries and ignites the spark of joy and discovery within us all. It is an integral part of life that transcends all barriers. It's different from sport because it doesn't necessarily require a structure, rules or competition - it's about the joy of participation and the freedom to explore our own abilities knows no bounds. Play is something that doesn't care about your age, abilities, or interests. It’s benefits extend far beyond mere amusement, encompassing the realms of mental and physical well-being. For children, play emerges as a vital catalyst for cognitive development, nurturing their creativity, honing social skills and fostering emotional resilience. It is a magnificent platform where their imagination runs wild, and friendships are forged amidst laughter and games. Play knows no age limit! Even for adults, it serves as a remarkable tool to alleviate stress, foster camaraderie and uplift overall mood and productivity. In a world where the weight of responsibility can sometimes become burdensome, play is the buoy that keeps us afloat, reminding us to relish life's simple pleasures. Physical inactivity is a concern, play can be a simple yet effective solution. It fosters a love for movement, making staying active enjoyable rather than a chore. As a form of unstructured exercise, it helps people stay physically active without the pressure and monotony that can sometimes accompany traditional workouts or sports. In essence, play is about embracing the moment, finding joy in the simplest things, and fostering a sense of community and belonging. It is through play that we can truly tap into the essence of being alive - that of constant learning, evolving, and enjoying the journey." Children are natural explorers and discoverers! Outdoor play can help them develop more comprehensive knowledge about their world as they have chances to watch, observe, predict, and learn in the moment. For example, they may encounter and judge situations like, “How deep is that puddle?” “I wonder if I can jump over it?” or “Maybe I’ll run around it?” Play benefits adults, too. Even brief outdoor experiences can help carry us through times when we can’t take an extended period of time to explore outside. When there is stress at work and all you get is a 15 minute break, walk outside, breathe in the air and take in the calming effect of nature on your senses. In your own backyard, or on a faraway trip to an unfamiliar place, breathe in the air using slow deep breaths. Idea: Take a "smell scavenger hunt" with your kids. Notice the smells in the air and encourage children to do the same. You will all be lowering your stress levels, building resilience and self-regulation skills, and strengthening connections to your surroundings. -Are you on our email list? We shared more ideas for outdoor play this morning. Welcome Back! For some in the Northern Hemisphere, this week marks the return to the school year. For others, it means the end of a holiday break and the beginning of the next term. And for some, it means that the thoughts and dreams of returning to another school year are coming. Here are some play-along videos to use as ice breaks, rhythm reading assessments, movement activities, and for community building. #teacher #elementary #music #playalong #videos

June has a lot to celebrate, including Sports America Kids Month in the U.S.! This means it is time to get moving with the kids, promoting healthy habits. Whether it is playing tag outside or extending playtime before dinner another fifteen minutes, it is all about making physical activity fun. Sports not only keep kids busy, it promotes self-disciple, coordination, empathy and confidence. While team sports teach children a lot of healthy skills, they are not for everyone. Kids can do a lot of activities to keep them moving, riding bikes, jump rope and even hikes. Whether you are a coach, parent, friend or teacher, your role is important. Kids can practice sports and activities at home, school, camps or with friends. With it being summer, is can be easy for kids to fall out of their school routines, spending extra time in front of screens. While activities can be expensive or time consuming, it is vital for kids to develop these healthy skills. This is why Beyond the Fence wants to help keep kids moving! #everykidplays #southernoregon #SportsMatter #kidsplay #equity #KidsSports #kidsfuture #letthemplayoutside #supportnonprofits #communitysupport #youthsports
